If someone has a trailer w/no title, should that be a deal breaker? Could you still stay in any rv park, state park, etc...? Is there something one should do in this circumstance before purchase? Thanks in advance

Hi WMH....

I would make sure I could get a title somehow since even to move it you are legally required to have a title and registration and I don't think most RV parks would rent a space for an unregistered trailer.

It depends on the state of course regarding ease of obtaining a title. When I bought and rebuilt our old 1955 Custom Trailer in the 70's in Oregon, I bought it as an old beater in a pasture with huge work to be done and no title.

I was able to have the guy who I bought it from...the guy who owned the
property it was left on....file for ownership due to abandonment and his claim for storage, get a notarized affidavit and sell it to me for $100. I took all that to the DMV and got a new title...then did the build....

In Alaska, it is much harder and you need to file a bond with the DMV to put in escrow and then I think it was another $50 or $60 to do all the paperwork to run it through NICB to see if it is stolen, etc., but the essence is the same..to get someone to claim ownership so you can get it titled...
Good Luck,
Bri

Good info, thanks! I see a lot of less expensive trailers and then see "no title" was curious if it was worth the bother. You answered a lot, much appreciation!

All in all for me, no title no sale... It just a pain in the rear for the buyer all the time...

I bought my little 5x8 trailer in Wisconsin new and dragged it up to Alaska with my motorcycle, tools and kayaks in it. I used it on the farm and never had it licensed or titled...didn't know you had to. Now, up here, I can't get a title for it because I can't prove where I bought it. A guy made them out of his garage as a hobby...I may have the receipt but haven't come across it yet...egads..Alaska is a pain the the rump trying to get a trailer license.
Rae

Wmh, most states have some sort of contingency for this situation. I know our 69 shasta TT didnt have a title , and i was able to get one witb a bill of sale and a bunch of other paperwork. That was in Ny, and i once had to get a salvage title foe a pickup i bought at an impound sale. Here in alabama, and i believe in, mabye in Tn and ga, you dont have to have a tag on your trailer if you dont take it out of state. I did buy my Chevy Blazer without a title in hand, but it was a former govt vehicle, and i bought it from a wholesaler ( middle man) so it was titled from the govt to me, not the middle guy. All in all, while not a deal breaker, its MUCH easier with a title in hand

A title also helps protect you to ensure you're not buying stolen property.

In Michigan trailers don't need titles, and many of them don't. You can still register them, you just need to get them weighed on a certified scale, that's it.

I even bought a brand new utility trailer a handful of years back and took it to get registered. When I thought I might sell it I couldn't find the title and went to the Secretary of State (dmv) to get a replacement and they told me I didn't pay the extra money to get a title for it, so I didn't have one.

But... that's all Michigan.

I gotta agree with the guys who say don't. It's so not worth the kind of trouble you have to go thru later.

I shy away from "no title". I guess I just don't want to take the chance. Knowing my luck it would be stolen LOL HuggZ

Thanks all for the advice and sharing your experiences. I think I will err on the side of caution, as it's not worth the risk if it is stolen or something... I guess the ol too good to be true adage comes to mind. LOL!

I would check your state's regs, as some are very easy when it comes to trailers. That said, I now own a vintage Shasta about that size and am preparing for the PIA that will be registering it without a title.

I expect that some random DMV employee's head will explode when I show up with a 6 digit VIN and bill of sale

I Florida, if you rebuild a trailer then it is considered a homemade trailer, and is given a brand new title, the same way a vardo is titled. You can pick up a trailer for a hundred bucks and tear it down and rebuild it to look different and no problem with titles, but if you want to register it as it is, huge problems.
