There are now some choices in shelf-stable milk alternatives. My favorite is Silk Vanilla Soy Milk. I prefer their Almond milk but it is usually easier to find the soy in the small containers -- I think they are 6 ounces?

The small ones come in a package of 6 and they have the collapsible straws attached to each "box" --- like a kid's juice box. I use the straw to puncture a hole and then expand the hole as much as possible. That let's me pour it into my cereal bowl.

Frankly, the vanilla vs "original" flavor is more like a milk shake...so any not used on cereal is great to drink.

I use a package up within a couple of weeks (I like easy stuff like cereal), so I'm not sure how van temps in the summer would affect them for a longer term. I just try to keep them shaded in a food bin that sits on the floor where it is coolest.

Wow, their pics make me hungry! It seems they must cook a lot on a campfire, though one pic shows a propane stove. But some of their dishes shown would take a fairly long time to cook --- so I"m betting the dutch oven and a fire are what they often use.

Good ideas on ways to up flavor and protein in the text.
