They are not safety railings, I rarley fall off the bed. But they keep the mattress from coming at me every time I hit the brakes.
Maybe overkill, since I 'm putting cabinets on both sides.
The gray material is carpet.  Automotive carpet for upholstery. It hides lots of imperfections. I gave up on the paneling cause I couldn't get it straight enough or even firm enough to attach anything on it.
I have screwed 1x4's on the ribs under the carpet. They are firm, and I can fasten stuff on them.

Your van appears to be a std length low-top Express or Savana. I have the Savana. If I can make a suggestion ... ...

... ... build cabinets initially only on the driver's side, and see how it goes. What I found after 3 years with my van is that, to me, the most important thing for comfort is to have as much "open" floor space as possible. Initially, I only had 3'x3' and it was horrible, especially since you cannot stand up. I could barely turn around in there. Since then I've been rearranging and taking things out, including the cabinet on the passenger's side in front of the bed.

I now have 4'x6' of open space and that is great. Plenty of room to erect a deck chair to work on the computer desk or a folding lounge chair. You would not be happy sitting on the bed with legs crossed for hours every day or cramped into tiny floor space.

Initially, I 'm not really building anything. I will add (and subtract) cabinets and stuff that I have already. That's why I'm all too keen to have them attached firmly, so they don't hover around in every curve.

If they don't work, or they are too much , too little or too heavy, they will be de-tached and gone or replaced. I leave a 2 ft wide walkway, if my plans are any good.

Good ... ... modular, incremental, reversible design, the best way. Then you can change yer mind without regrets. And be sure to designate a nice cozy hospitable space for relaxing (ie, for when conscious).
