Howdy,

I am new to this whole "vandwelling" thing and also relatively new to Austin. I don't have a rig yet but am currently looking and figuring out what I should get.

Right now I live with my son and his family in a back bedroom of his house. Because his kitchen is unuseable (for reasons I shall not discuss) I essentially live in one 8x10 room already. I wash my dishes in the upstairs bathroom sink. I have already pared way down, having moved here with only what would fit in my Volvo 240 wagon.

I have gotten a temp job, here in Austin, and take home about $600 a week. So, I could afford an apartment but I don't want all my money going to a landlord. Because I am not paying my son rent (at his insistence), and I have a bit of cash already, I can save up pretty quickly for a tolerable trailer or RV.

My "lady friend" is also interested in vandwelling, as she has done it in the past and loved it. In fact, my parents lived in a trailer in my grandparent's front yard when I was a baby. Our plan is for me to start as small as reasonable and then we can grow into a larger rig when we can afford it. Eventually "settling down" on a piece of land with self-built housing supplementing our mobile space.

Because I cannot currently afford to fix up a rig for complete off-the-grid living, and because I work in town, I need to find a space in an RV park that is a tolerable commute from the Round Rock area. My problem is that I can't find a place that will accept older rigs and I cannot afford a newer rig. Does anyone have any suggestions for parks or ways to find a legal place to park my future home?

Thanks,
Grant
