Hi all -
As I approach retirement in the next few years the lure of mobile living is capturing my attention!

I have a couple of questions for you....

1)  The cargo van idea is appealing as you get to have exactly as you want, but have any of you had the 'you are not welcome here' attitude when trying to Campground Host or work camp?  I am trying to exlore all my options so any feedback on Class B's?  I'm not a carpenter so I would most likely have to hire everything done. :-(

2) Also, is there such a thing to be had as unlimited data for Internet usage like Wifi when you are changing locations frequently?  I am blessed to be able to work remotedly from my home in any state, but have to have secure Wifi.  I would continue in this field of work part time (hopefully) if there was such a thing.

3)Lastly, any of you ladies who do this solo I would really like your feedback and any helpful tips and/or advice you'd like to share.

Thanks!

Welcome :D

You are at the right place to get started and being able to work as a VA (virtual assistant) will be a big help.

There are some places that have WIFI and also have places to plug in an ethernet cable too.  You'll just have to hunt.  (but more and more of those offering WIFI are catching on to the fact that the businesses that install hard line connections will attract the traveling business types who require secure connections)

if you built up a Van or Box Truck to your likes,  you could find a sign company or detailing business like those who contract to Car Lots and install Tape Striping.   Then you could have some graphics installed on the exterior to make your rig look more like an RV with this treatment.

Here is one example

I'll invite you to look at my two web sites below and use any ideas from them that may appeal to you.

Welcome Deb!

1) yes, unfortunately a cargo van can impact your hosting options, but that certainly doesn't mean there aren't many options available. Brian on this forum does a video blog, I believe this is the one where he found out he was turned down due to vehicle:

2) You don't need to be a carpenter...this site has a sister youtube channel with many great interviews and tours of vans that required minimal skills, just good ideas. Here's just one example of a retired woman's cargo conversion:

3) There's a sub-forum here just for women: https://vanlivingforum.com/Forum-The-Girls-Room ...I'm not aloud in there, but I imagine they talk about stuff you'd be interested in ;)

Deb! Welcome to the CRVL forums! You've come to the right place to learn and ask questions.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi welcome! these questions can be answered here for sure. Ocala didn't want me to host in a van. They needed people and wanted me to do it, but they had problems in past. Like Brad said there is anwomans forum, we will answer questions! Three years never any problem with strangers. Glad u are here :)

No question about it, some paces will turn you down if you are in a van. But, there are also many that will not so don't jump to conclusions. If you are wiling to go to smaller, more remote campgrounds, especially ones without hook-ups, it's almost guaranteed you can get a job because the RV crowd generally won't go there. We had hosts in the high Sierras in tents and others in pop-up trailers.

The job I used to do they can't find anyone to take, they will let you live in anything to go there!

Thanks eDJ for the suggestions about Internet, but I work with Protected Health Information so I can't work in a public setting.
Also, great information in the links you provided - very easy to understand!!

Thanks Brad for responding!
I follow Brian and think his video blog is one of the best I've come across so far.
So happy about the sub-forum for women - I'm sure to find great information there!
That van conversion link was awesome - she did a great job!

Deb,

I didn't do anything to my cargo trailer, nothing.  I stuck a rug in it, a cot, some trunks, cooler, a bucket.  I'm quite comfortable, I can stay in a motel once in a while, or with friends.

Unlimited internet at McDonalds, libraries, home depot, many many businesses.  And every moose lodge I've been to has had great free internet.

Women aren't allowed to join the moose, but they can join "women of the moose".  Its a wonderful organization.  You can walk into any moose lodge, show the bartender your card and order a coke, and use the internet for hours.  The moose is very family oriented, and a single woman would be fine in one.

Good luck.
