Hey yall, name's Kelly. I'm about 6 months away from turning 20. The big 20, while most kids my age are off to college I'm sitting here dreading the idea of apartment living and balancing school work and a crappy job. Conventional life just isn't for me, nor for my significant other. So here we are diving head first into this new and completely unknown world of van living. I've looked over the sight, and am continuing to do so but I figured I'd introduce myself. I have many many questions and I hope you'll be able to help me out .
Hey Fuz- You're soooh right about conventional living. The PowersThatBe want you to be a good little slave and go in debt to the tune of $100,000 for a college degree for which there may no longer be any jobs...so yeah, you're on the right track in not wanting conventional living. All I would say is find some skill, some training program, some apprenticeship...that you can make money with. Jobs with benefits are going the way of dinosaurs anyhow...even decent jobs. So take an inventory of your skills or even your interests and devise a plan to learn something useful that you can make money with. And now, speaking as a homeowner who may NOT be able to sell my home at all....unless I practically GIVE it away...your plan on mobile van living is looking pretty good given the times we live in. If I were single again without all the baggage we gather in life, I'd start out the way you are contemplating starting out. Don't let people dissaude you. Sure, if your family is rich and you pick a college major where jobs still are and you want to invest the next 5-8 years of your life..... personally, I like the alternative approach...fits more with a collapsing society and economy. Good luck.
Thanks Dust, honeslty I've never really had a passion, kids in school want to be a doctor or a lawyer. I just want to live . I've never been a fan of school. Although I'm not lazy like my teachers think. I do enjoy working and making an honest living. I prefer to have practical skills, such as learning how to handle a tool or take care of my van, or read a damn map. Because of my comfortable life I'm lucky I can make myself dinner, most kids I know can't. It's awful. Anyhow enough of my rant, I will look into apprenticeships like you suggested for sure . Thanks again for the warm welcomes
