new to the desert

I've been lurking for a while, so I figure it's time to say hello!

I'm really looking forward to the RTR next month. I've never camped in the desert, so this will be a whole new experience for me! There's a small chance that I'll be nursing my sister through kidney surgery, but if not, I'll be there. Looking forward to meeting all of you.

I drive a 2000 Ford E150 van and pull a 10-foot molded fiberglass trailer. I'm just sorting things out with storage etc, so this trip is kind of a first run. Exciting!

The trailer is a vintage travel trailer. I've spent the summer stripping out nonworking junk and repairing holes -- somebody really  got overenthusiastic with a drill! Probably several someones. Luckily, fiberglass is easy to work with. I'll know more about what I might like to replace by spring.

This one's a U Haul. I think there were about 2000 made in the early 80s. I looked a long time to find one with the frame in good condition, because I didn't want to deal with that straight off. I don't have the skill -- or the physical strength! Most of the original stuff -- ice box, battery, small solar panel, heater, water tank, lots of the wiring -- was gone when I got it, which is ok with me. Now that it's watertight (ok, one window will need more work), I'm moving my tent camping gear in for this winter. I'll know what else I might want by spring.

The U-Haul eggs were made by Burro, in San Diego. They went out of business around 1999; very nice trailer. My wife and I almost bought one; had an order placed with a deposit as they were shutting the doors and throwing away the keys. We did get our deposit refunded.

Welcome. Take lip balm and moisturizer to the desert. We lived north of Tucson for 6 years and staying hydrated and moisturized will make your visit much more pleasant. The fiberglass molded TTs do seem to live on decade after decade. Enjoy the RTR!

The little travel trailer sounds awesome.   Have any pictures of it by chance?

I have never really stayed in the dessert either.   Driven through a few times so I am looking forward to making it to the RTR.

Louise, I have a little Playpac. It needs some work which I'm no longer capable of doing. I'm going to have to hire the work out because, even though I plan on getting a Class B or B+van soon, I still want to keep it. I can tow it with anything. I even can tow it around my property with my little four wheeler when I want to move it.

I know the u hauls. They are known for being solidly built.

Some of the people may have moved on, so if you don't get a reply, they are not ignoring you.
