new to car life

Hi all,
I just came to AZ from Indiana, and have been staying in my car on BLM land either near Quartzsite or Havasu.  So, being used to living in an apartment within a few feet of others, its a little much parking so far away from others.   What is a polite, but somewhat close-ish distance to park near others?

Welcome to the CRVL forums vwtramp82! You can gauge how close is too close by how far apart the other people are from each other. Most people prefer to be far enough away that they can't hear what's going on in the next camp. It'll probably be farther away than you think. As a kid I had family in Texas and Arizona and in the summer when I visited we camped & fished.  Being from southern Ohio I realized that there was a difference of "comfort zone" they had out west compared to what is normal in the east.

If I were car camping as you intend to do,  I'd consider 300 to 400 feet.  It is far enough for comfortable privacy and close enough that if an alarm were sounded you could hear it and possibly see someone trying to hail you.  But who your neighbor is and where he came from may make a difference too.   You may also consider asking a BLM official what is a considerate distance too.
