Am I being paranoid by not opening a link or linked image inserted by a newbie forum member in their first few posts ?
In the past I've been to forums that require the new member to have XX posts before they can add an image or link to a thread. They can post just not use the image or link function.

Although restricting a new member through a web-site software wouldn't eliminate exploits and I'm not suggesting that anyone here has ever done such a thing but.....

Also, for those that do click the links, what anti-exploit software are you using?

I'm running Norton Internet Security and Malware Byte's Anti-Malware.  Never had a problem with anything here, but frankly, I don't even usually LOOK at the Newcomer's Corner.

As a moderator I click on all of the links when I notice them. So far I haven't had any problems. I use Avast Antivirus which usually catches everything

Question for all of the members - has anyone opened a bad link?

Another example of the behind-the-scene work and dedication of our forum moderators!
Hats off you guys!

I, too, check links.

If you're using chrome you can right click on the link and then click on inspect element. The last part of the code should read *HTML* without the asterisks. Anything else, most especially exe is suspicious.

Beyond that we ask members to include a brief description of any link they post.

After my little notebook finally crapped out (XP w/ AVG anti virus) I asked an I.T. expert buddy what I should switch to, he suggested a product called 'Bit Defender'.
I bought a refurbished laptop (Windows 7) [I'm kinda old school...baby steps] and installed the 'free' version of Bit Defender...still trying to decide on which version to purchase.
They have a very slick network product called 'Bitdefender Box' that can cover whatever devices you may have.
While checking the url to post here....they're having a sale. :)

You are wise to be cautious. This forum seems to not draw too much of that type but it's not impossible for one to slip through the net of out mods. MalwareBytes also has a free anti-exploit version that I run along with their Anti-Malware software , they have a free version and paid version with a few more features like real time monitoring.... I also use Microsoft's built in Defender anti virus .

Forums are perpetually being attacked by spammers and hackers, it is literally a life-and-death battle that goes on behind the scenes. This forum is on the Mybb software engine and it does an exceptionally good job of keeping the bad guys out. It has no choice, any ***** in the armor could open up the whole system to attack.

Plus our moderators do a tremendous job of being diligent. Much of the credit goes to them!!!

I have only had one bug since being here. I got an email from what appeared to be here saying I had a PM waiting. When I clicked on the link, (in my own email), it took me somewhere else. So Control Alt Delete let me shut down the browser. I should have known better to click on a link in my email. I use Kaspersky's, antivirus, been happy with it .
