e450? whats thats 2-21/2 ton? if so 500lbs is nothing, you could load it full of bricks and be o.k.

I really don't know, looking it up provides nothing but confusion. GVW is 14,000, rear GAVW is 9500, but without putting it on a non-existant scale those numbers don't mean much I think...

Good call on lid SW, they're so heavy that hold downs didn't even cross my mind...

How about building a frame out of 1x1" square tubing , 1/4" plate on the bottom.
Just throwing ideas at you.
The upper horizontal tubing on each side could be longer to be able to mount it to your outer joists on each side

Good point about the heat, maybe a shield on the bracing to divert the heat around the box. Once mounted I would think a simple rod across the tops, through the sides of the box would keep them from bouncing not that I wouldn't prepare for the worst case scenario.

It's not what the truck can handle Gary. he wants to hang the batteries below the floor and is designing the box to do it.

because people where warning him of have that weight behind the axle,if it was 1/2 or 3/4 ton definitely and its always nice to have your weight between the axle but unless he hangs it off the rear bumper i dont think it would matter much,i would be more concerned about the heat, ventilation and holddowns

Might also consider some vibration dampening pad on box floor and holddowns. L16s plates are tall and likely make battery more negatively impacted by vibrations. They were designed for stationary applications, not mobile.

A deep box hanging below floor might accentuate vibrations. Perhaps induce metal fatigue.

Also consider rocks picked up and thrown by tires at speed.

Aren't we all a bunch of worry warts. lol

On the good side it will give you a lower center of gravity.

He could put them on the roof but then they'd be a couple meters closer to the sun. :D
