Ok you can be a northern engineering guru..... but I have a problem that I need some input on how to fix.

I live in a 36 ft 5th wheel that is permanently located on my land.. so it doesn't travel at all.

I am still in the process of completely moving in.... so only the last few months have I been here on a more permanent basis. In that time I have discovered that every time it rains I get wet carpet under one window. If it rains extremely hard I get wet carpet and a small puddle on the kitchen floor (from another window).

I have been all over the roof looking for where the water was coming in (not it) but I finally figured it out today when we had a slow steady rain.

The water is coming off the roof and running down the window in a sheet of water. Which then pools in the track and overflows to the inside. When I found it today I put a sheet of plastic from the inside to the outside so that the water hit the plastic and ran on down the trailer instead of pooling in the track. But obviously this was just a quick temporary solution it keep water out. I need some kind of gutter or awning to stop the water from running down the window. Or someway to stop the water from filling the track. I can't add a full awning because it is too windy here. It would be history in short order. Any suggestions?

Here are a couple of pic ... one indicating where the water is flooding the window

This is the window that floods the worst because of water coming off the rise in the roof

I believe the correct approach to solving this problem is to recaulk the windows.

Get a hold of a copy of Trailer Life's RV Repair and Maintenance Manual by Bob Livingston. There's a chapter dealing with these kinds of problems.

You might find a copy to browse at a Barnes and Nobles. Or your local public library can get a copy for you through Inter-Library Loan.

Regards
John

Thanks for that advise John... I will look into that book, I am always willing to learn something new.

But the caulking is fine.. Hopefully it was a drainage problem. I just found the drains and they were clogged with debris. I have cleaned them out so that the track now drains properly... If it over flows now it is going to be because the amount of water coming off of the roof is too much for the drains and I will be back to my original question. At that point I will have find a way to deflect some of the water away from the windows.

It's not raining at the moment but it's trying so I will know hopefully know soon.

ice, it looks like there is a drip rail on the roof line. is there? those are like mini gutters are they clear. highdesertranger

Highdesertstranger ... I am not sure what it is called but the one that goes straight across is the mount for an awning. It is c shaped with the opening at the front for the bar with the awning attached.

I do think the angular one is a bit of a mini gutter but that just means it's dumping most of the water over that one window that is leaking. Hopefully I have solved the problem by cleaning out the drains which were clogged shut.

This thing was in storage for 4 years, so I am still working out some bugs from it not being used in so long. But all in all for a 90 model it is in very good shape.

Note: getting some rain now and so far so good... not pouring like earlier, but so far no leak

Ice Maiden,

I would look in a home improvement vinyl siding area for something you can install (directly above your windows) as a rain deflector.

Bob

ok I think the drain cleaning might have fixed the problem... got some rain with water running down the window and no leak..... drying the carpet with a shop fan at the moment so will be able to tell for sure once it is completely dry. Have more rain on the way.

Thanks Bob I will look into the vinyl siding idea because I think Bindi&us is right and deflecting the water away from the window might not be a bad idea.

One day I hope to over roof this with some extra on the front. But till then I would like to keep it as nice as it is. That won't happen if I let water ruin it.

Go to your local hardware store and buy a length of "drip edge",It is shaped like an " L ". You can use mastic tape to adhere it to the side of your RV. I am going to put some on my RV because the seals tend to dry out and get hair line cracks and let water in.

Ice, If it's set up to be there permanently and never going to travel..... if you can afford it, have you considered building a pole barn over it?

I would imagine that a pole barn would not only help with your leak problem, it could also extend the condition and life of the trailer. Not to mention providing year round shade.

Check This Out: http://bestpolebarnkits.com/

Joey... Thanks I will check that idea out.

Ziggy Moon kinda the idea I had but was leaning more toward the metal carport like below
I just have to find one that will cover my slide and still leave me room on the front for a "porch" area.

No it is never going anywhere but I want to leave my RV so that it is readily movable. If I do this they will not tax it onto my property as a home, and all I have to do is pay the land tax of about $180.00 a year. And the tax on that metal carport is much cheaper than on the pole barn.

See, you asked for a southern engineering guru and found southern minds - do think alike!

Good idea on the metal carport.... a tax shelter (literally!?).
