It does say that 2nd gear works and you can go 30 MPH. That's city speed. I see that Oceanside is 30 miles from San Diego, but may be doable. Just not on the freeway, lol.
I'd have to plan that out real carefully but considering that you can throw a rock down here and hit a freeway or a highway, I'm not sure it would be possible. I won't put any energy into that until the guy gets back to me with answers to questions I've asked yet though. Thanks for the suggestion/idea :)

Drivers license in hand is the major step. Just talk to some local insurance agents. Call Uber and see what a local 30 mile ride costs. Then major issues are figured out ahead of time.

I'm almost certain you could talk the seller into driving it to your place. I noticed from google maps that 101 goes along the coast, but would guess parts of it are a free for all, given what I know of CA drivers.

1) Doghouse?

2) He hasn't gotten back to me so I don't know. Also, I'd have to rent a vehicle and tow trailer to get it down here.

Doghouse is the engine cover inside the van.  Pics from of the inside looked fairly clean.  Wondering what the exterior looks like?

What would it cost, realistically to fix this - just the transmission?

Thanks much!

my opinion, if you have to ask. run like the wind

project vans like this can be a steal, or a nightmare. you really need some skills and experience to be able to inspect something like this before jumping into a project. if the info is 100% correct, and there are NO other surprises. then it might be a good deal. but there are a lot of "if's" in there.

so becareful

on the other hand, the scrape value of the van at scrap metal buyer might get you close to your money back if it went south. and then salvage the good stuff out of it before you scrap it. like the solar and batteries tires. if you wanted to and had the place to do it. parting it out could get you a good return too.

so if you are ready and able to play the game, there is certainly potential

but i would be cautious of hoping to buy it and fix it cheap

So, this showed up in my feed this morning. Could I possibly ask for more advice?
While I have until the end of the month to move, I'm feeling very pressured and am... leery of retaliation from my now-ex-BF or something so, the quicker I can get out, the better.

It has a clean title and when I asked why they were selling, they said they were moving to Puerto Vallarta.

Thank you so much!!!

It's been lived in so it could be hit or miss as to cleanliness, odors, etc.  Inspect it in person.  The minivan is certainly more stealth for city, down side is smaller interior and it has Arizona tags and that will stand out in California, especially in San Diego right now.  You'd need to have it smogged to register in California if that's the direction you want to go, otherwise transfer into your name in Arizona.  It depends on where you pay your taxes and where your driver's license is, because California is getting nasty about bleeding people for state taxes.  Out of state vehicle registration is one thing they look for...  Make sure the check engine light shows with the key on and engine off.  Start the engine and the check engine light should go off and stay off, that's a real good indication things are Ok with the engine controls.  If the check engine light stays on...well then there's a problem that will cost some money to fix.  I see duct tape on the rear bumper cover, so there might be something going on there, maybe they got bumped in the rear.  You'll still need to check fluids, brakes, suspension, maintenance items, tires, etc. before a long trip just to be sure.  Negotiation etiquette... Based on that pricing they're likely expecting to sell at $1000, so I'd offer $800 cash, they may or may not counter-offer, they might hem and haw a bit, just be comfortable with some awkward silence and listen silently, tell them it's a reach for you and offer to meet somewhere in the middle... at perhaps $900 or $1000, of course they'll bite at $1000...  Don't smile or accept right away... always always ask the magic question, "is that the best you can do?" and wait for their answer...  Good Luck!

From the external viewpoint, it does look like a better bet than the other 2 vans. The gears all appear to work (!!!!), and in the same price range. Just the internal furnishings alone including solar, plus good tires, are worth a great deal right there. Road MPG will be much better.

Mileage is higher than I would like, but it's only $1200. First thing to check is how much oil is puddled under the engine. Besides all the other things.

In Bob Wells' videos, he does say he thinks the best deals for newbies are minivans in the $3000 range, so maybe concentrating on minivans is a better bet in general than those other regular vans.

Regards plain minivans, a very good resource is cargurus. Enter in zip code, type of vehicle (minivan), and max price ($4000), and do the search.

that price for a minivan of that vintage is a bit on the low side. so either is is a great deal or it is about to puke a transmision or there are other problems.

the "solar" they show in the add is a trinket. not going to do much. maybe charge a cell phone
