well they don't give a lot of info or pictures.

here's it what I summarize, it needs a transmission. if you can shift it into reverse, first and second you should be able to get it into third because that is in between the others. that should be a 4spd trans it will cost more than I,000 bucks.

so without more info I can't say one way or another.

If the ARB fridge in the photo is included, it might be a deal to get this just for the fridge, solar and other builtout stuff, then scrap the van or resell it as a parts vehicle.

You are looking at $2000-$2500 or more for a running driving van. A better rig could be had for that amount, at least in my neck of the woods.

Oh gosh, 240,000 miles with some mechanical problems. Might be ok if you want to park it under a bridge in the city and live there.

OTOH, like noodles said, for just $600, I might buy it just to grab all of the furnishings which includes a solar installation, then junk the van, and buy a newer empty van and put the stuff in there. Ready made.

In regards the van that won't reverse, it would be helpful if you could get someone to make an estimate of what is needed to fix it. May be a simple fix. It's a bit old for my tastes, but also cheap enough it could be kept for a while, not driven on long trips, and then junked if need be.

You might have to think about these things as "temporary starter vehicles".

Not to mention, the $600 van has "very" good tires. That's a bundle right there.

What if I just bought it for the solar panel the inverter and etc? With towing (I'd have to rent a uhaul and trailer) that would add another $100 to the total.

It does say that 2nd gear works and you can go 30 MPH. That's city speed. I see that Oceanside is 30 miles from San Diego, but may be doable. Just not on the freeway, lol.

Get a tow policy and wait till it goes into effect?

Many here recommend having an emergency roadside service. Some of them offer so many tows a year, and some deliver to your driveway especially if it is a short distance check with them.

Ah, well... since I don't have a car, I don't have insurance so... /chuckle
Thanks for the info though, I will definitely remember that when it comes time to get insured.

JV, there are a number of things to work out, and they have to be done one step at a time. Make a list and for each item, figure out how you might accomplish it, depending upon your current situation. I can see what a problem it is to start from scratch. It's kind of a Catch 22 roundabout circle.

- driver's license, need a car to drive.

- auto insurance, try talking to some local agents ahead of time, ie right now, about what you might have in mind, eg an older van, and get some estimates; minimal insurance required.

- available vans are 30 miles away, try to find someone to get you there and back to look at them; Uber may be an option too, and whoever is selling the van may drive it down to where you're living, so just ask. The seller would probably drive it to your place, as he wants to sell it.

- money, well that's a personal issue.

I recently did a bunch of work on a friends 1995 G2500. Parts are amazingly cheap for these older vans! ... Was thinking I should get one myself. The doghouse provides lots of room to work on them, and small block gm engines are durable as all get out. That van sounds like it will need a transmission, but might be worth it depending on the condition of the rest of the van.

1) Doghouse?

2) He hasn't gotten back to me so I don't know. Also, I'd have to rent a vehicle and tow trailer to get it down here.

Have driver's license :)

On my list of things to do!

Yeah, I've been looking for ones as far as 50 miles away so...

- money, well that's a personal issue.
Well, the gofundme, facebook fundraiser, and paypal have gotten almost $800 so far. I'm hoping it doesn't peter out for a long while - still over $4,000 to go to read my goal.

Maybe a friend that does can help you out.
Unfortunately my circle of friends is small and most of them are not close geographically - cons of being an introvert and social mainly via the internet /chuckle - so... nope.
