I have an opportunity to acquire a 2005 Ford E250 converted van. 8 cylinder. Has a bed, ac, heater, generator, in excellent condition. 66k mi. Claims it gets 16 mpg city, 20 hwy. Is that good miliage? I'm wondering if it is a gas hog and if I will be able to afford to drive it (to the RTR)   ??

I have a chance to buy a Ford E250 converted camper van, v8, 66k. Claims it gets 16mpg city, 20 hwy. Is that good gas miliage or will it drive me to the poor house??

That's good gas mileage, but we don't know how close your poor house is.

that's pretty good for a 3/4 ton van. how much do you plan to drive? highdesertranger

Sounds like a wonderful van. The millage you describe is pretty typical. As for whether it's a "gas hog," that's kind of relative: a tiny car that gets 36 mpg requires other life adjustments. The van can be your house, and gas then becomes a living expense. Only you can decide whether you can afford it.

If it has the 4.6 L engine, it can get around 20 mpg on the highway if you keep speeds around 60-65, which is decent fuel mileage. It probably has a 35 gallon tank, like mine did, so that will yield almost 600 miles of safe cruising range.

66,000 miles is very low for a 13 year old van, what was it used for?

And tell us about the heater and generator it has.

Keep in mind your driving style and speed has a lot to do with gas mileage in a vehicle. We used to have an Astro van ('84) that I got 22 MPG on the highway. Sold it to a friend and he complained he could only get 18. YMMV

thats excellent gas mileage, I average a measly 11 mpg on my 1986 astrovan 4.3 liter 6 cyl.  Luckily I don't drive too far. Even after removing extra agm house batteries I use to carry to reduce weight I still getting 11 mpg, I use to get 12 mpg when I first bought it 5 years ago.

Once you start driving it if you keep track of the odometer between fill ups, you might notice the actual mileage will always be lower then what they claim it is capable of achieving.

Our Love Rocket window van can get 20 under laboratory conditions at ~58-60 with the 4.6l. But generally the 15-18 range is normal.

Sounds like a pretty good salesman to me.    You need to know what engine it has.

I have an 06 E150 with the 4.6 and it might get 15 avg but I have ladder racks and ladders 24/7 and the engine is very well broken in.

your mileage posted is low. Mine has 330,000 miles......but I work a lot. like 8 days a week.

I'd still like to see maintenance records if available

I'm with you closeanuf...I have an Explorer and a 2016 R-pod I was going to trade, plus give him cash. A friend talked some sense into me. Nice to have friends. Anybody interested can find the van on Craigslist in Asheville NC. It looks like a good van if that's what you're looking for.
