Here are some with ok mileage and worth looking into.  You can always ask if they can take your BMW for trade or partial trade.  Is it possible to get a loan from friends or family to cover the rest?  Or credit cards to cover the rest? and you pay them back once the condo is sold?

LMTLMT,

Wow, thank you so much for doing that!  I looked yesterday and saw only one of those that you wrote.  I didn't see the others.  I saw one yesterday and asked if he would trade.  It is here.  The miles are over 100K.  He is in Syria fighting and he may be interested.  Would you please look at it and let me know if I should pursue that one?  Thank you so much for your time and effort.  :)

No, no deals with people overseas, sorry, maybe he is legit but that is the most common scam going on CL right now, transactions should be face to face, in person, preferably at a safe location

Oh my!  What is the scam?  I wouldn't make any deal until I saw it in person and got a mechanic to look at it.  Thank you for the advice.  I never bought a car like this before from the paper.

By the way, I checked some other sites given to me from this thread for comparables and I was off as far as the worth of my car.  I could possibly get up to $10,000.  It is fully loaded with extras and low miles.  Smog passed in March.  A couple of those vans didn't have phone numbers.  I am assuming they were sold, but I appreciate it just the same.

They have you paypal the money, and the van disapears, is one way they do it, or the title is bogus, or the van is stolen
Cash, in person, with the title signed in your presence by the person whose name is on the title, (or at least you verify his ID) in a neutral location, preferably a bank lobby or the DMV

I don't want to scare you away from CL, most of the folks there are legit, I believe, but there are scammers, and the 'selling my car while overseas' routine is a very common one

Question:  Is it common practice for people to demand you reveal your phone number when you respond to Craigslist?  2 of them did so far.

I've heard of some folks insisting on it, some of them on here
generally it doesn't bother me, my phone is a non contract phone, and my # won't lead you to my house
You can get a cheapo 'go phone' from WalMart for this if it worries you, myself I don't worry about it, but then, I'm big mean and armed :p

Being an armed woman in California means nothing here, lol.  I would be arrested if I shot a burglar.  It just about happened last July.  The police are against armed citizens and they did nothing to the neighbor who broke in....I need to protect myself and CANNOT AFFORD TO LIVE NOW so I cannot buy any other phone.  I am in over my head and that's why I am getting out.  99 percent of my income goes to  my home. The rest goes to my sick cat.  Thank you.

I wish I had any advice to give on that, that's one reason I won't even visit California
I know at least two people here who won't respond to respondents on CL without a phone #, so I'd guess it's pretty common, but i can understand not being comfortable with it
personally I seldom have difficulty getting responses to email, and usually phone #s follow soon after
Some ads the poster even puts their phone# as a contact, those are usually legit, in my experience

The box van is in Arizona. False advertising...:(

ArtW,
Thank you so much for the info and heads up.  It would be so much easier if I had someone like you's guys to do this for me.  I have the kind, gentle, woman look AND voice where people TRY to take advantage of me EVERY chance they get.  Even though I am a Mamma bear hear if you mess with me or mine.)  I am probably the worst person in the world that should sell a beautiful car like I have and get a fair price and the same for buying a van too.  It is so hard trying to do this.  I have neighbors harassing me and I just need OUT

I did look at the link for that van you provided. That van has been on CL for a while now. I personally would like a van with under 80,000 miles to start and original owner. There were two very potential vans listed last week and few days later, gone. Since there are so many out there looking especially in L.A./OC area, you just have to ask all the right questions. If someone doesn't answer your question directly or change to subject to something else, I pretty much move on and don't even invest my time anymore on that listing. For example is when you ask if the van leaks or how long have you own it or do you have maintenance records, these are legit questions and if they don't answer directly, red flag already. An good ad will have all these questions covered and all you have to do is verify it when you see the van.

Last is, I know your current financial situation is not the best desirable as cash is king. When I was looking, I have cash ready (meaning either have cash on me or have my bank branch near sellers area) in case we make a deal and everything checks out and complete the transaction as I know good deals on CL don't last long, usually its the first person gets there with cash.

You'll see some same vans day after day or every few days and same ads on multiple cities. Those I try to avoid.

Also I avoid ads with no phone number listed saying leave your number and I'll call you back. I also do a search on phone numbers that is listed and google it to what I can find out. Some time you'll see that number is often in other or past ads and you know its a reseller. I automatically walk if I see that.

If the reply number is an out of state number but the van said its in say Torrance, it would raise the suspension a little and I would be careful.

Don't forget to calculate how much time and gas to go out and see a vehicle. Say you live in the valley and there is a potential van in Riverside, that is a long drive and lots of time. Ask all the right questions and if everything is answered and the van meets all your prerequisite, make an appointment and ask the owner to give you a chance to buy before others since you are coming along way. A good honest understanding seller will do that. Lastly, don't try to make an offer or bargain on price WITHOUT seeing the vehicle, this will piss off many sellers. If a vehicle is in super nice condition but seller asks very high, and I'm not 100% ok paying that price even tho its super nice, I would wait to see days or weeks later if the price has been drop. So many on CL asks for ridiculous amount first try to profit on unknownly or inexperience buyers.

Keep scanning and you'll bound to find a good one ;-)

I am not a mechanic so I would have to take the van to the mechanic to have them check it out.  That becomes a problem because if I have to drive to Riverside, etc. it would take me a whole day to get an inspection and drive back and forth.  I asked a guy yesterday if I could take his van to the mechanic to look at it and he said no, his dad is a mechanic =red flag.  He also said it was in someone else's name who owed him money!

I think the best thing would be for me to sell my car first, but if I sell it I won't have transportation to go look at a van.  Argh!  Thanks for all the advice as it is much appreciated.  P.S. I don't like to put my "business" out there, but I may be getting some money, some time soon, for, well, it doesn't matter why, but that would be ideal, but I have no guarantees.  I am just crossing my fingers and praying it is soon.  The only other option I think I have now is to live in the car with my sick cat and sell the condo.  If we could survive until then, all my problems could be easier.

Yeah, that's one big reason why I am leaving CA.  I am headed east when I can.  California might be nice to visit, but we have outgrown each other.  I used to live in Hawaii for 4 years- same thing there.  Not a great place to live unless you are ultra rich and can leave whenever you want.  Very claustrophobic too.  Another drawback is, you can't pick up and drive anywhere!  I wanted to drive "home" to CA many times when living in Hawaii.  It is pretty difficult having to mail your belongings in boxes that way.  A bunch of my stuff was broken or missing when it got to CA.  Any advice on cooler summer places to live?  I cannot stand one more hot summer here.

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has taken the time to help and read my post. I have been very stressed and am really needing out ASAP. I have a friend in trouble in Georgia and need to go there, and I cannot afford to live here and hate it any way. You all have helped a lot with your advice and research. I can see now the only 2 options I have is to trade my car for a van or live in my car with my cat until my condo sells. (unless that money from being injured at work comes first.) I just can't imagine how he (a sick,, elderly indoor cat could survive with me in that small space in a police unfriendly town.) He has never gone to the bathroom outdoors (only in 2 litter boxes) I don't want to smell up my car either so it won't sell. I am trying to train him to be on a harness and leash, but he is 14 yrs old and it may not be possible. (Can you teach an old cat new tricks?. LOL.) :)

Welcome xfile36! I am trying to do the same thing. I found a good deal and fair trade, sent the guy pics of my vehicle for trade and never heard from him. I will prob end up camping out like I always do, and will not get to upgrade my camp like I want. I am still putting together components that I can throw together in my dream vehicle when I get it. Just getting the potty figured out was major and I am so glad I took the time doing that. Now I am working on the kitchen components to make tailgaiting easier. (I cook on the tailgait of my truck) So if you see someone out tailgaiting in a Chevrolet, that could be me.  :)

Also, if your car is strong, why not tent camp or pull a small travel trailer? Can you lay the seat down in your car and sleep comfortably? There are Prius dwellers on this forum. You could check out how they do things and get some ideas. Good Luck! - Crofter

If you got enough money on the settlement you might get something like this
http://www.cheaprvliving.com/adventure/runaway-mini-camper-review-part-2/
and pull with the BMW, if BMWs can be towed with
as far as cooler summer weather, it's not about distance, it's about elevation, Flagstaff is probably nice right about now, later on higher up
Be nice if someone stepped up and bought the condo, furniture and all, for a fair price

XFILE36, I think it's a good call to have a mechanic look over a prospective vehicle if you aren't sure how to do so yourself - this can end up saving you a lot of money in the future.  First I would focus on selling the bimmer for $8,500 (unless it's black on black, then $8,750) - that is if it's a perfectly functioning car.  I would start by having the oil changed (without the extras the shop will want to perform like air filter and trans-service - yada-yada), and clean the car VERY well.  Start on the outside with a garden hose and dish soap and finish with whatever car wax is on sale.  Give the interior the q-tip treatment in all the little knooks and cranies, and clean the leather seats with a mixture of equal parts vinigar and virgin olive oil (add a drop or two of lemon for foo-foo) - this is only cheaper than store-bought leather conditioner if you already have these items.  Once the car is totally clean inside & out / top to bottom, you can ask $8,500 and present a car to a buyer that looks loved.  When a buyer asks about maintenance, you tell them that you just had an oil change done on it, and if they ask about trans service or this or that service, you can just simply say that there aren't enough miles on the car to warrant expensive maintenance, and it functions perfectly as it sits.

Yes, it's going to suck not having a ride to go look at vans now, but you should have ~$8K to go find a good Chevy or Dodge (I love my Fords, but I wouldn't put one of our girls in a mod-motor - just my opinion), and besides I've been to L.A. (Lord help me, I hope my Mamma never reads this), and there y'all have something that most places don't which is a well-established public transportation system.  When you go to look at a van, try to have the appointment to meet with a mechanic about 30-45min. after the appointment with the seller.  I wouldn't ask if I can take a prospective van to a mechanic, but just do it, and if the seller calls wanting to know where you are during the test-drive, you can tell them then that your tech is looking it over, and that it's safe & sound at Premium Car Checker-Outter's shop, but not to worry that they aren't turning any wrenches on it, and you'll be back just as soon as they're done looking it over.  In my experience no one wants to give permission to have the vehicle looked over, but the sellers with nothing to hide won't get angry when you do - you may have heard the old saying: "It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission."  That means you should probably ask about the title first to be sure you aren't wasting your time and money having it inspected.

Just as an added bit of what I would recommend for you shop for in a van:  Try to stay under 100K miles as that is where your expensive maintenance comes in (spark plugs, trans & axle service, belts & filters are all due for a change-out by then), but I know that lower mileage vehicles cost more money, so if you're not able to afford a lower mileage van, then see if you can't get one that's already had it's 100K mile service (specifically including spark plugs & automatic transmission filter).  As I said before I would say to look for a Chevy/GMC or a Dodge since Fords have been known to do things like spit out spark plugs, and they have finicky parts like cam phasers.  Price-shop up to $1000 over your max since most sellers out there aren't really expecting to get their full asking price, but be sure to leave yourself enough "just-in-case" money for any unexpected repairs.  I'd argue that the number of owners doesn't matter unless it's an obvious flip, or it's had a history of fast turn-over as that could indicate a more serious problem, but 2-3 owners 2-3 years apart over 10 years wouldn't bother me a bit if it's clean & cared-for.  Commercially owned vans are hit & miss since they're usually well maintained, but they're often "rode hard & put up wet."  A conversion van would offer you a high-top and a better starting point from a builder stand-point, but you'ld be hard-pressed to find a conversion van in an extended length.

Anyway, I think I've said it all, and I should probably stop before I end up chewing on my shoe - that is if I haven't stuck my foot in my mouth already.  I hope everything works out well for you, and good luck in your adventure.  Cotton
