I have not been posting my monthly finances as of late, mainly because they have been pretty boring with the long stretch of urban camping this year. I spent more than nine months sitting still this year with only about 10 weeks of traveling [in the van], so the year end finances have a unique spin over from the 2013 totals. This year I also decided to leave out my personal purchases (airfare, pet stuff, guns & ammo, clothing, etc which totalled another $2700) and instead focus on just the real-world numbers on van-life.

The big change over 2013 was my lack of movement. I spent April to November stuck in one place so I drove only 5,200 miles – half that of 2013, and only one third that of 2012. This had a dramatic effect on my gasoline usage which averaged only $153 per month, less than half my monthly budget for gasoline. Where did the remaining gasoline funds go? Camping…

In 2013 my monthly cost of camping was only $50 each month (still too much in my opinion). 2014 shows a hefty increase and of course it has a direct result to my stationary life. Another change over 2013 is just how much money I spent eating out instead of cooking form myself. Obviously, when I am in-town, I am lazier and choose to dine out more often… something that both my belt and wallet like to remind me of.

Overall, I spent less than 2013 (non-personal item comparison), but by only $900 for a $9600 total ($26.30 per day average). For 2015, I’d like to drop that number even further and if the fuel prices stay low, it will be an easy challenge to fulfill.

I realize the month-averages do not work out to the year-end total. That is because I only averaged months in which spending was done in the category. For example, I only spent money Camping 9 months of the year (not all 12) so only those 9 months were averaged. Propane is another example, wiht only three purchases all year.

thanks vantramp. I like that you share this info. I was wondering how the averages were the same but the totals were different. highdesertranger

I haven't set sail yet, so have no experience here. This is good example to have. Thanks for sharing.

I pay thirteen a month for my moms republic wireless phone, data thru wifi only tho. if we were in sprint area, id get the 5gig data plan for 25$, but only att towers here. :( i keep a 120min dumphone for 9 a month (29/3 month service days). i dont talk a lot lol

I have a pay-as-you-go phone (Tracphone) which only gets refilled a few times a year. I really do not talk much on the phone (I prefer Skype, which is $3 of that $12 every month) and I text once or twice a day on average. I think I went 7 months in 2014 without a refill on the minutes which I usually buy 600 at a time.

Which towers does Tracphone use??

That is the great thing about these pay-as-you-go phones, they use ANY & ALL networks. I have more coverage and pay significantly less.

Thanks a whole bunch!! I really like the 'any and all networks' idea.

I'll be spending a lot of time south of the white line this summer (cross border shopping..lol) and then plan on spending my government limited 6 months stateside starting in November. One of the final things to be figured out is connectivity.

Since I can work on the road from anywhere I can go where I want as long as I'm connected at least several days a week BUT I use a lot of minutes (last month was almost 1,200 minutes).

I couldn't find any 'Unlimited usage' plans on Tracphone. Do they exist?

Prepaid either use AT&T/T-mobile (GSM) or Verizon/Sprint depending on the phone, and whichever carrier the prepaid carrier has a contract with, so don't expect the coverage to be any better.

So what you're saying is it's an either/or situation dependant on the phone itself as opposed to utilizing whatever tower is available?

Does Sprint have their own towers or do they use Verizon?

No, I do not see any unlimited plans.

Net10wireless (http://www.net10wireless.com) does. They are the pay-as-you-go provider that focuses on monthly plans while Tracphone focuses on purchasing of minutes.

I started with net10 when I first started vandwelling. They had a data limit of 1.5 gigs and you couldn't tether.

I then switched to AIO wireless which was taken over by Cricket and I now have 10 gigs of data for $45/month I think it is. The only bad part about is its only ATT towers.
