Do those bug/rock shields really help? I read somewheres that moisture and crud gets trapped in there and has an adverse effect on the hood.

From my own experience I think they do help. I've noticed when I'm up to a certain speed (maybe over 50 mph) that bugs going for direct contact with my windshield all of a sudden flow over as if going for a ride on a wave of air. Not so much at slower speeds.
Stuff like leaves do get trapped in there, but I keep the van clean so that's not an issue for me. One thing that's on my to-do list is to drill some (2 or 3) small holes at the bottom for drainage as water gets trapped in (the lowest point) the center.

Looks good and works great, very well made.

Painting with fire! I did the same thing and love it, a technique my widow taught me many moons ago.

I'm using that too on my build.

As soon as time permits I'll get pictures up.

P.S. that's quick and easy, but if you want to add some depth after burning wire brush it! Brings up the grain in the wood.
