Here,s my family biscuit recipe. My grandmother taught me how.

Biscuits (24)

4 cups of flour
2 Tablespoons & 2 teaspoons of Baking powder
2 Tablespoons of sugar
1 Teaspoon of salt
1 cup of shortening ( i use Crisco Gold)
2 eggs
1/1/3 cups of milk or cream ( i use half and half)

mix all the dry ingredients, cut in the shortening with a folk until cookie crumble like. Mix eggs and cream in cup and add to dry ingredients. Roll mixture out onto floured board about 3/4 of an inch thick. Cut em out, slap em on a greased sheet. 450 Degrees for about 8-10 minutes.

Hi oldsoul...thanks for the recipe...awesome. It goes in my personal recipe file!

I have spent a little time and effort trying to come up with a simple mix to carry for a stove top baking thing for pancakes, bannock, biscuits...etc. and I came up with :

1 cup flour...I use half and half unbleached white and whole wheat
1 Teaspoon baking powder.
dash of salt
tablespoon of oil or butter

That can be altered in many different ways to make anything bread-like....it can be halved, it can be doubled, tripled, etc.

My van is pretty small and I don't want to cook a lot, and I can only bake on the one burner stove...so frypan stuff is my forté...
Bri

Bring your biscuit recipe to the RTR and I will make my famous sausage gravy and we will marry to two for a fantastic biscuit and gravy breakfast...

If I am not first in line, give me a boot in the pants...
Bri

Camp by me Bri, ya know I feed ya well... But you will have competition, Ol' Zeke demands his cut every meal... LOL

thanks for the biscuit recipe Oldsoul, I'm going to try it maybe this sunday to spoil myself!

Soulraven, mmmm biscuits and gravy! I can almost taste it.

Bri and anyone interested: here is a link for some pre mixes to keep on hand if someone has the room. I'm pretty sure they can be halved as well for a smaller space. I especially like the oatmeal one! But, they are all good! I make my own laundry soap and have for awhile. It smells amazingg, works as well as Tide and is WaY cheaper. All ingredients can be found at Walmart too... But, again it may be a room issue for some. It cost less than 15$ to make, which may seem like a lot but bet it lasts some folks a year as you only use two tablespoons which is a shot glass full! (I make the dry powder soap and use the oxy, it's cheaper w/out the oxy and I understand works well too) If you don't find the powder one on there, cuz i know she does a liquid too, let me know and will share that.

WildMountianhoney, thats a really cool idea. I was thinking about buying some laundry soap too. How do you store it? i would imagine a 20l pail with a tight fitting lid? Great stuff.

I bought a big glass jar at Walmart for 10 bucks. However, it wouldn't work for traveling... this pic is from my first batch. And, it smells so great, fresh... no need for adding scent crystals imho. Also, I really use a shot glass for measuring, it's all you need!

dang it. deleted post before i could reply.

this is a good recipe she gives ya. very good for clothes. it can be used for shampoo and dishes and bath too.
now i am lazy and also because i had time trying to find the fels napa. so i just use the borax, baking soda and generic oxyclean.

she is right, it only takes a little and lasts long time. the thing with cleaning clothes is to break the surface tension of the water. this is why there won't be much suds with this. i've spent 7$ on all ingredients and mixed in bucket with lid and it lasted near 8 months for lots of laundry. i think sometimes too for sure it is the water, rainwater is so soft, but well water is hard to get things clean and is rough on skin, hair and laundry.

Kid tested, Aunt Meg approved! - great stuff!

I found the fel's soap at Walmart w/the rest- same aisle... really like it.

I'll vouch for the laundry detergent recipe too. I made it in scaled down batches, used Zote, and skipped the Oxy. Haven't used it in the HP machine. It's the first new washer I've ever had, and I'm skeered.

Vickie

i was reading last night how to can a cake. it looks easy. might go with this thread a little? basically, make up the mix, sterilize the jars/rings/lids. fill jar halfway and bake in oven, seal when done and turn upside down. when jar cools, check make sure it sealed. can last a few years and always have a fresh cake or brownies. it calls for using pint jar. this is how i do spaghetti sauce.

That would be a great gift idea! I don't trust myself with canned cakes in supply! LOL!

Thanks for the recipes! I'm so sick of paying big bucks at the dollar store for nasty cr##p!

As for those biscuits and gravy! No fair, guys! I can't get to RTR till next summer! Can you do it again? Maybe make it a bi-annual sorta thing?

My grand daughter and I sure enjoyed making your biscuits tonight, Oldsoul! And, eating them was even better! Thanks for the recipe!
