Music on the road

<p>Music's a component of my life I value a lot.&nbsp; Starting my day without Gregorian Chants, some Carlos Nakia Navajo Flute or Mozart Horn Concertos later, some hillbilly bluegrass wailings and old rock and roll is something I'd hate to have to experience.<br /><br />When I got the RV a friend who's also a music lover commented those 300 cds are going to take up a lot of space.&nbsp; Sent me a thing called a Sony 16gb MP3 player and instructed me how to get my cds into something the size of a credit card by running them through the computer.<br /><br />I picked up a small speaker for $10 that recharges off a wall wart or the cig lighter on the rv [the magic music machine also recharges that way].<br /><br />Absolutely one of the few things that have changed for the better since around 1945, from my limited perspective.</p>

<br />100% agree with you, Jack.&nbsp; I use my iPhone for music storage (including Gregorian chants, btw).&nbsp; I have a small speaker thingy with a dock that runs on batteries or better yet, just tuck the phone in my pocket and use the earphones.&nbsp; Won't disturb any neighbors.&nbsp; Carrying all those CD's is just too much.&nbsp; And I replaced the old in-dash radio/cd player with one that has an aux input jack so when driving down the road, I can hook up to that.<br /><br />A world without music is like food without salt.&nbsp; Bland.&nbsp; Ugh.

Any favorite performances on the Gregorian Chants you'd care to share would be appreciated.&nbsp; I usually like them all, but some better than others.&nbsp; A YouTube link would be cool if there is one out there.

My wife and I have SiriusXM satellite radios and we both use it extensively....a device and service well worth every penny it cost. Nearly unlimited station choice, although they don't have my personal favorite music...African folk music and Hindu kirtans...so for that I use internet radio when I have a wifi connection or CDs and MP3.<br /><br />I have all my vehicles, home and shop set up to move the radio from one place to another....all hardware is available for cheap on Ebay. We both have the exact same radio 'Roady 2' so we can interchange them..... <br /><br />Bri

<br /><br />I am a Grateful Dead fan and listen to either that, BBC or NPR a lot on the road....sometimes the book channel and recently Coffee House channel...Awesome, makes the miles sweet and productive....

It sure does!!&nbsp; I used to listen to the Book Channel, but I never seemed to remember to tune in at the right time for the continuation. lol&nbsp; I think my radio classics station is one up from that.

The 16gb MP3 player has turned out to be not quite enough to satisfy my promiscuous music tastes.&nbsp; The same friend who sent the MP3 put his entire collection on a T-Drive I provided him, loaded it with 600 gb of music.&nbsp; So I'm thinking that I'll use the MP3 at times, but when I want to expand my hearing I'll plug the T-drive into the laptop and listen to it directly if I'm in a mood for everything not on the 16 gb MP3.&nbsp; <br /><br />600 gb is up there in the 20-30 thousand songs range, and even though the selection is limited by the difference in his tastes and mine [he doesn't have everything, for instance, Roy Orbison or Johnny Horton ever did, doesn't have much classical, not much big band, no opera, etc, etc, etc] there's&nbsp;at least variety.<br /><br />And in a pinch, the T drive has space for another 400 gb.<br /><br />If any of you ever find yourselves looking at me over a cup of coffee we might want to talk music.&nbsp; If we have similar tastes we might even swap some files.

I love Johnny Horton, but I rarely find someone else who appreciates it. <img src="/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" align="absmiddle"><br /><br />I also love my eclectic music collection and couldn't bear to be without it. &nbsp;<br /><br />My plan is to continue using my laptop to serve up my music through the van's audio system while driving and through a pair of laptop speaker when I am parked. &nbsp;I am not sure if this will be a workable plan though, since the laptop, although only running at 45W, is still a major drain on the batteries. &nbsp;I may have to rethink things when I get on the road.<br /><br /><br />

Love Roy Orbison, Johnny Horton, Marty Robbins... my mom and her boyfriend used to listen to them all the time when I was a kid, and I was a strange teenager that I loved it. They also used to listen to the old truck driver tunes and I loved them as well... Red Sovine, Ferlin Husky just to name a couple.

Hi Annie: Johnny Horton's life and career were so short a person didn't have a lot of chance to get addicted to him.&nbsp; But he turned out some fine songs, though relatively obscure and almost totally forgotten these days.<br /><br />[video]<br /><br />[video]<br /><br />I'm glad Roy Orbison enjoyed a longer life.&nbsp; He's another one has some obcure songs worth the listening, but finding them isn't easy, even with the Internet and YouTube being so good about having a lot.

<br /><br />I like the Jawbone Jambox&nbsp;too and almost picked one up until I read some reviews about the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox.&nbsp; It's actually smaller and not as expensive as the Jawbone.&nbsp; The Jawbone runs about $150 or so and the Mobile Boombox is $99.&nbsp; So far I'm really impressed.&nbsp; I use it with my Ipod Touch Apps (ie Pandora, Public Radio, etc)&nbsp;.&nbsp; I wanted to use it with my laptop but&nbsp;discovered it wasn't built with a Bluetooth module. &nbsp;Here's a link to a review with a short video.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2409489,00.asp">http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2409489,00.asp</a>

It's neat how they made my van. It has stereo speakers in the bed area for the dash stereo, in addition to front door speakers. <br><br>When I installed my car stereo from a previous car (well, it's been in 2 different cars actually haha), I wired it so it has a switch on the dash so it can be turned on with the ignition like normal or left constantly on (powered by the isolated house batteries/RV converter) depending on if I'm driving or stopped for a long while and have shore power.
