For those considering a shotgun in an enclosed space. It is not an NFA weapon, legal as is.

WOW! A 14" barrel? Mossberg says it's legal? I was under the impression that a shotgun needed at least an 18" barrel to be legal?
I guess things are changing.

Looks nice.  $450 list price.  I've been wanting to get a short shotgun for the camper.  Do you have any experience with the birds head pistol grip on a 12 gauge?

If I were to buy one I would print up and have with me at all times the copies of the law. I'm not sure some Barney Fife would know that tidbit. But they skirted the rules fairly.

And thanks for finding that bit of information.

My pleasure.
I had heard of another enterprising gentleman getting around the rules like that about a year ago, and I'll bet Mossberg hired him to set the parameters for theirs. He beat them at their own game. :p

I am like Spaceman Spiff, I would like to fire one and see how the design does cut recoil.

I'd rather have a shotgun with a stock on it.

I posted it because of the older thread a month or two ago about a shotgun in a van. Personally I agree with you about the stock but the 14 inch barrel is intriguing.

Mossberg Maverick 88 is another option. Its the entry level but reliable as heck and just about every part is interchangealbe with the 500. Great for HD. Look for it at chain retailers when its on sale. I picked up mine for $179 at Dick's.

I seek out gun clubs while traveling and occasionally will stop and talk with local Police to help me with directions to the club as well as meeting the rare LEO at the range. I am never surprised by the misinformation that most of them have regarding what is and what is not legal with anything firearm related.
One interesting response, "I don't care what's legal in your state, around here we just confiscate everything and let the Judge sort it out".
So, my 2¢ is maybe ok in a S&B but not so much while traveling.

I always get a chuckle seeing a pistol grip shotgun, thinking of all those newbies who try to aim using the bead sight. Someone ends up mopping up the blood when the shooter whallops himself in the face.
I had a PG folder on my Rem870 for years. With the barrel shortened to 20 inches, it made a handy package. But folders are always a bit floppy. I went back to the original wood stock.
The Mossbergs are good shotguns. I would buy one if I didn't already have three Remington 870s.
Both companies make stainless "Marine" models. A good way to go if concerned about condensation and rusting.

I showed the weapon to the security here, he's a cop for his regular job, and his response is much like Matlock said. After reading the rules he agreed it's legal, but the cop on the street may not look for anything but the 18 inch rule. Interesting shotgun though.

That's my preference as well. I tried pistol grips and they just weren't for me. Besides, how are ya gonna stand it up in the corner? :p
I wouldn't mind checking the shockwave out, but it's not a priority right now.

I don't think that's a particularly useful shotgun, even with light loads... in my experience pistol-gripped shotguns have a very limited value. I have a Mossburg 590 Mariner that I've had for over twenty years. It's got a 20" BBL, will hold up to 9 rounds in the tube, will handle magnum loads with slugs if I want to load it that way, can be deployed anywhere that 14" can, but can also be used as a stand-off weapon at a fair distance.

The reality is that you're not going to use a shotgun inside a van anyway 14" bbl OR 20" bbl. You may aim it through one of the doors to the outdoors, but if you're in a bad tactical situation INSIDE a van, it's too late to try to deploy a shotgun. There are better tactics to deploy.

Myself, I carry my AR-15 M4 with a handful of 30rd magazines when I travel, but I have a 50 state ticket (being a retired LEO.) If I didn't have that, I'd be toting my 590 along as the next best thing. I'll say though, that in over 40 years of travel and camping I've done, I've never deployed ANY gun tactically.

This reminds me of the thug in the movie "Killing tThem Softly" who sawed his shotgun so short the shells stuck out the end of the barrels -- which I think was a gag lifted from a British movie.
