Im tired of charging and swapping batteries in flashlights and lanterns to get weak but sufficient light. Can someone link me actual bright led lighting (whole fixture if possible) they would recommend to hook to my house batteries?

I thought i remembered bob having an article or blog with some but those parts of the site do not work right on either of my mobile devices.

It's not the cheapest but might be an option if you are near an Ikea:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00119424/

I've had mine for 2 years and they are wonderful. Very compact and durable. They come with a wall plug that outputs 12v - just figure out which wire is +12, snip it off and connect to your battery. The set of 4 is just right for my main office/kitchen area.

If you search Amazon for "led dome" you'll find a million choices, maybe too many!

Thanks for the links! I searched but yeah, so many choices i wanted to consult my real world product testers here lol

I found I like my lights Aimable. What I found was that nobody made a light that fit my needs/wants. So I made what I wanted.

I took a 99 cent store gooseneck LED lamp, and modified it to accept a T-20 Cree bulb that was designed to be a vehicle's reverse light.

I pulled fatter wire through the gooseneck and some other modifications so that the light is hooded. I do have a PWM dimmer which does Dim these bulbs.

The best part is I aim them at my white ceiling for a nice ambient light, or turn them around and point them down to my Slide out table.

One of them is on My ceiling, I have another one on about a dozen feet of wire with a ciggy plug on the end, meant to be portable.

I did a write up on the old forum, don't know if it came to the new.

Here it is showing the hood and the nice white light:

I incorporated some strain relief on the wires where they exit the base of the light:

I had to resolder a power lead on the LED driver circuit board which required opening up the bulb for access.

I like the Cree single emitters rather than corncob style 5050 SMD leds.

I just put some aluminum tape as a reflector inside the hood.

I was so impressed with these Cree LED's in these modified fixtures, I ordered two more from the same seller on Amazon. What arrived had Blue heat sinks, which impart the unwanted bluish tinge to the lights.

They are also driven harder consuming .18 amps vs the .12 of the bulbs in the above photos, and are even brighter.
I did not send them back in time and will at some point make another gooseneck task light. On this I will put a 25khz PWM motor speed controller for dimming.

I have a 15khz Dimmer on another light, however it made these Cree bulbs whine when dimmed. I'd bought is as a speed controller for a powerful computer fan but it made the Fan whine loudly too.

The 25 khz pwm controller keeps the whine inaudible to my ears.

This is the 15 khz dimmer:

I pulled the guts out and installed them in my 'In bed' reading light, which is really nice. I feel too much light to read by makes it harder to fall asleep.

The 25 khz 10 amp motor speed controller is much larger, with large finned heat sinks.

I bought one through Ebay but it was missing parts. They sent me an additional one. In the mean time I'd found the same product on Amazon for a buck more and it came complete. So Now I have 3 of these:

The knob with the dial (potentiometer) is on about 16 inches of wire, and can be remotely mounted.

Anyway there are lots of 12v LED bulbs out there. I think Dimmable Cree is the way to go. I use the regular LED bulbs in some other incandescent fixtures but will phase them out.

The Cree's are so much brighter, and whiter. Mine have seen about 8 hours of use each day since October.

If you really want a LED fixture, check out some Marine based Websites for Ideas.

Oh here are the t-20 Cree bulbs I ordered which I put into the 99 cent store gooseneck lamp.
http://www.amazon.com/RHX-Power-Backup-Reverse-Backwards/dp/B00AZFEXJ4/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

But I ordered from them again for more and received the blue heatsinked bulbs which draw more and make more light(and heat).

I think I am going to stuff both bulbs into another gooseneck lamp, with one of those dimmers. Perhaps tonight.

How about some nice warm white LED single bulb fixtures, from a reasonably good quality Marine company. Gooseneck, reading light or even outdoor light, all for under 20$ each?
14.99$ for the indoor ones. If it's good enough for a couple million dollars worth of yacht, it's good enough for a van too.

The newer models have some more features, but I'll keep the 45$ in my pocket and call it a day. Plus I don't really like the whine at low power, or the almost always on glow from the button surround.

Home Depot is now selling LED light bulbs, they are about $10 and 120v. I just use them in a regular fixture and plug it into a small inverter 100 to 150 watts.

Hey there Spiritual, hope all is well for ya :D

HD has some LEDs that are actually 12V and use (I think) 1W, maybe less for about 10 bucks (1 1/4"X 1/2"). They have 2 pins that will press right into a clean cut lamp cord. A dab of some rubbery glue (I like Goop) and it will hang about anywhere. Add an inline roller switch and its a cheap, down and dirty low draw light.

Personally, I think the one Bob has with the dimmer is a great way to go. You don't always need full light, especially when stealth.

I love that light fixture more the longer I own it. Anybody who can strip and crimp a wire can install it and it is polarity neutral, you can't install it wrong.

On high it's a lot of light but the dimmest setting isn't all that dark, but noticeably darker.

Greetings!

A few years back I picked up a couple of LED lanterns fashioned after the old railroad lanterns from WalMart.

They are dimmable, solar/crank/12v lighter powered, and they can sit on a counter/table or hang, totally portable, so indoor/outdoor etc. With a full charge they'll run all night on high.

Two of them are capable of lighting a pretty large campsite.

I prefer portable so you can take the light where you need it...

Cheers!

I installed 2 of these today
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CZCY5SE/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They are sooo bright. I installed them today in the afternoon, and just checked it out in the dark about an hour ago and it was crazy with just one on. I probably could have skipped on a second one, especially since i have white paneling in there lol It will be nice not to have to fumble around any more, and i could easily read by the light.

They were bigger than the picture would lead you to believe too, id say at least as large as my open hand. Im hoping i dont bang into them with my rock head :p

Would be neat to have a gooseneck fixture that will hold an LED flashlight so it is multiuse.

I picked up an LED light at WalMart that will go into my van soon. It's a rectangular unit with six BRIGHT white LEDs, and uses AA batteries. It has a separate small switch box using a couple AAA batteries, to give wireless remote OFF&ON. Works very well. Has two mounting holes in back of the main unit to hang on a wall or ceiling. I intend to put the switch box near the side doors. Should be great for Van Camper lighting.

Sounds like the same thing I picked up but at Home Depot. It didn't have a specific illumination rating, but it is bright. The bar the LED's are mounted on pivot, so that greatly increases its functionality.

Also, it uses AA!!!! Not AAA. AA's have at least twice the capacity of AAA's, so it lasts much longer. I use Eneloops, so I swap batteries about once per week. Will still be mounting a permanent light connected to house batteries, but the unit you described, if it is the same as mine, works extremely well for a battery operated unit.

Do you guys have a model number, name or link of these lights? I'd like to check into them.

Mine uses AA for the lights. AAA only for the wireless switch.
