Day-1 of painting is complete. Started at 10 am and ended at 3pm. Painted the topper (2 coats), all corners and edges in doors/windows/etc, and painted first coat to all 6 doors, hood and cowl... I'm tired!
- It definitely needs two coats. It looks a ton better after the 2nd coat.
- So far I have only used two gallons. I suspect I will use only two more... possibly three. I will be returning nearly half of the paint for a huge savings.
Day 2 of painting went smoothly. Nice weather, and big flat areas made for easy painting. It dries so quickly I was able to put the windows back in and all the lights/grill too.
I used a total of 3.5 gallons to paint the entire van (two coats). At $125 a gallon, it is good info to have. I am returning 3 gallons of paint and some other misc items. That should bring the total cost of the paint job to roughly $700-750 for an extended van with a topper. This can easily be done out in the desert or anywhere.
A normal sized van without a topper could be done on 2-3 gallons, and a single day of painting with a single day of sanding the day before (as long as your paint isn't flaking off like mine was)
• If working outdoors, avoid coating in windy conditions to prevent leaves, bugs and debris from blowing into wet coating. If temporary indoor space is available, apply coating outdoors and move vehicle indoors to dry.
• Do not apply in the rain. If rain is forecasted, park vehicle indoors and keep vehicle dry prior to surface preparation and coating installation. After coating installation, do not expose to rain for a minimum of 12 hours.
• IMPORTANT! Never coat the bed of a vehicle that has been sitting in the sun. Surfaces must be at ambient temperature or cool to the touch. Park vehicle indoors or in a shaded area prior to coating and allow surfaces to cool. A hot bed surface will cause solvents to flash off (evaporate) too quickly making application difficult.
Looks great. I've wanted to paint my van like this for a while, but couldn't find a supplier with a choice in light colors. Monstaliner may be the one. I just looked over their options and requested some color chips. Some amusing color names they have, too - I'm a fan of "Sans Panties." Although, it seems to be a medium gray.... I would expect flesh tone, or pink? I digress. Let us know how the paint job holds up.
I would like to see somebody photo shop some truck mag wheels onto it .
Maybe some Eagle alloy 058 wheels ( dark gun metal grey) or something simular.
Fat tires too
