I don't love the desert, but I find it fascinating. With the RTR coming up I thought some may be find this stuff interesting

Not exactly a book, but a free read, on line.
The journals detail his crossing the Mohave Desert. In his first trip he went west at the top of the Cajon Pass rather than east, traveled up through the San Joaquin Valley and into Nevada from there.

His second journey the Mohave Indians helped him and his men load everything on to their rafts and attacked them as they were crossing the Colorado River

""I wanted to be the first to view a country on which the eyes of a white man had never gazed and to follow the course of rivers that run through a new land." ~ Jedediah Smith"

There are other journals and diaries listed on the website

There's a facebook page that posts stunning pictures of the Mohave

I've spent four winters in the Mohave and the only thing I think of when you say it is WIND!!!

Unbelievably miserable, non-stop WIND! Yuck!!!

ok I just got to say this I have been resisting. it's the Mojave Desert not Mohave. I know who cares. highdesertranger

when I was a kid my friends and I, just to be silly would call it the Mow Jave desert, with the J being pronounced as a J as in John. like I said silly kids. highdesertranger

Arizona’s use of “h” apparently is an attempt to anglicize the Spanish pronunciation that uses the soft “j,”

Rodeeo or rodayo ?

I've never seen rodeo spelled either way

Oh, I didn't get it since we were talking about spelling and not pronunciation. Mohave is pronounced the same no matter which way it's spelled.
Since my domicile is AZ, I spell it with an *h*

good pull Cyndi I never new. but I have checked out and in AZ it is apparently spelled Mohave most of the time. I stand corrected. I guess it depends what side of the river you are on. highdesertranger

I think the dominant cultural influences in an area influence the pronunciation of certain words. I know that some people from other areas of this country pronunce the names San Diego with the english phonetics while most people that grew up or live here for significant periods pronunce it with the spanish phonetics. This same example may apply in the situation with the name of the Mojave desert.

i love the grammar police because they are wrong and have not studied history, there is no english, english is a hodgepodge of many languages, sure the angles brought some of their language but there is plenty viking and a lot of french and latin tossed in

example

if it's dirty and in the field it goes by old english-cow,pig,sheep

if it's clean and on the dinner table it goes by the french words-beef,pork,mutton

and we are speaking american not english,if we where to speak english HDR would tell you to go in your boot and grab a spanner then open your bonnet and check if you are getting petro and if your tyre is not properly inflated the tarmac will make it wear improperly

in the end it is all just modified grunts

I remain uncertain about a response towards the post from above because the tone of that post sounds slightly deprecating towards other posters. I will agree that many aspects of American English originate from other languages. This includes the name of places as well as nouns, adjectives, and other parts of written and spoken communication.

Well gary, there were no grammar police in this thread, there were some folks having a civilized discussion and enjoying it. That may have been what set you off. Sorry you misunderstood. (-;

ACaged, very well said. Succinct and to the point, especially since you are speaking American and not that angles dialect.

has nothing to do with prior post,i deleted the rest of my statement,to political, click the name in my sig and study some history
