I was told by my desert field studies professor that it got the name Mormon Tea because they were not allowed to drink caffeine, so they used this as a substitute. it does have a slight pick me up effect. highdesertranger

Yes, it does. It has been banned from products in the US because of heart attacks and strokes (even young, healthy people died from it) so use with caution. That being said, I have used it without problems but I am also ADHD so stimulants/uppers don't affect me like normal people and I also didn't abuse it.

The type of Ephedra that is actually the Mormon Tea bush does NOT contain ephedrine (which is the risky stimulant). Other ephedra plants DO contain the stimulant.

The Mormons also used it as a general spring tonic... so let's go with that. Plus, if you know your wild edibles, it is FREE tea for desert dwellers. The mountains give us free tea with pine and spruce needles.

There's my problem! I'm getting over a bout of flu --- I know now I had not been getting my minimum daily requirement of hugs! Maybe a side seminar of giving proper hugs will occur at the first aid tent.
