I'm finally here! Well, in a few hours anyway. I'm taking a break from cleaning and moving to let you guys know I'll be in my own place now. I wanted to do this in the summer of 2013, but ended up in the hospital which cost me thousands and thousands of dollars, so I paid that off. (Most of it.) Then was trying to do it in the summer of 2014, but just couldn't quite make it in time before winter hit. Now it is late spring of 2015 and the day is here! Woohoo!

Am in an S&S slide-in camper for now while I make a custom build slide-on camper for my flatbed pickup. It is a bit of an experiment and will definitely be documenting the build. It will be completely self contained. We will see how successful or not this project will be.

While waiting for the right time, I've been living as if I were off grid as much as possible. Have been showering with my weed sprayer. BTW, those things work great! Haven't had any weeds growing on me since I've started using it. Lol. Been heating up water to do the dishes instead of running the water in my apartment. Experimenting with electric and gas water heating. Got a nice garbage can for a small space. Been getting rid of stuff. Got rid of more stuff yesterday. Digitizing my CD's and important paperwork. Learning about batteries, solar, refrigeration, insulation, etc. Have been making the best of my time while waiting.

Now I won't have to deal with my landlady and her noisy, biting dog. No more Black Widows in the basement apartment. I drive truck for a living, but won't be able to do that much longer, so having the flexibility of moving to other work could be a tremendous help. While my current dog goes with me everywhere, the future one won't be able to for at least a couple years until it is trained and hopefully certified; I can take my camper/truck to many places of employment and let the dog out every couple hours instead of leaving it penned for 8+ hours. This is very important to me and completely solidified my decision to have more flexible housing that gives me more options.

My current landlady said she didn't want any more dogs after my current one, so that condition was a deal breaker for me. I knew within a week I was moving, but did not know exactly when or where. My dog is a service dog, but I'm not going to fight her about it. She can't stop me from having a service dog, but she can stop me from having a service dog in training. Nor did I want any sort of conflict with her. She has the power and could jerk me around if she wanted to. Who wants to potentially be under someone's thumb like that?

Will likely be away from the Internet for a few days until I get all set up. Hopefully the delirium tremors won't be too bad. Lol.

I can't imagine the difficulties of figuring all of this out on my own. Especially the mental part: "How is this possible? Could I do really do this??" You guys have and with gusto! Not just surviving, but thriving. I'm still having those thoughts, but they are greatly muted because I know it can and is being done many times over.

Thanks a bunch everybody!!

Congratulations!!! So happy that you're breaking free. And yes, you can do it! If I can do it, anyone can, and I'm in my second week and still alive. ;)

Congratulations!  S&S makes great truck campers.  Even if it's just temporary you can enjoy it.

BTW, 'The Final Jump' is the one where your parachute doesn't open.  ;)

Hope you have a great time and some fun adventures!

Did I see on another post that you are in Great Falls? I lived there for a few years back in the 90s. Should be some good weather coming up for you in your new rig.

Congrats!

Being sorta partial to truck campers myself, I give this post 2 thumbs up!

;)

Thanks guys! Even though I've been on the forum for a while, I'm surprised at how nice it is to be welcomed. I'm eating at a Taco Bell using the WiFi. I'm finding it interesting to see how the camper works for me regarding layout and the amount of space. It has a bathroom and that sure sucks up the space. It is nice to have a shower space, though. This is a temporary place until I build the one I want, and it sure helps to actually be in here to visualize what I want. I would recommend if you are having thoughts of what you want, try living in a van or camper to see what works for you and what doesn't. It's easier than trying to figure it out while living in a giant apartment- and funner, too.

WriterMS, yes, I'm in Great Falls. Very windy. I thought the wind noise and the rocking of the camper would bother me, but it is quite pleasant. Living closer to nature in a camper is more like a tent with all the conveniences of a home. Hard to appreciate unless you've been there. I've read other people that have said that, but now I understand better. It's one thing to go out for the weekend, but another thing to live it.

Good luck. About time you dumped the basement apartment and landlady.
I like TC's but there's no stealth so I can't have one.
What was I going to ask you? Old age... I can't remember. Anyway, you'll do fine because you are not alone! Sorry about your hospital issues but maybe that's all past now.

Time to move forward!
