I use Hamsticks exclusively on my motorhome. Based upon numerous antennas I have experimented with, they perform the best for my application. I never operate HF when in motion, so I don't care how far they stick up. The roof of my motorhome is a single sheet of aluminum 8' x 16' and acts as an effective counterpoise. The antenna feedpoint is located exactly at the roofline which is abt 11' off the ground.
Hamsticks are effective and cheap. I first tune the Hamstick at the resonate frequency I want using my antenna analyzer. I do use an internal tuner in my rig when operating. It is fed with unbalanced line, RG8X.
My next project is to permanently mount a 32' Rohn push-up mast I can use as a center support for a full sized inverted Vee dipole when camped for a week or so.
