what would happen if I cut the 110 plug off a set of lights and used a 12 volt power source? Kind of a dummy with electrical, just wanna re-use some led xmas lights inside my van.

It won't work. Since they are led you should have no problem powering them with a cigarette lighter type inverter. They are $20.00 bucks or so but for a little more you can move up to a 300 or so watt inverter
