I probably would have said something like, 'Could be, your Honor; starvation will likely affect my ability to make decisions.'

Hahaa.....I thought of that very same excuse...AFTER I got home.
Also, "Knowing that my business is failing right now because I'm sitting here in court, will keep me from focusing on the facts of the case like I should be" would likey work well too.

(but I'm not always quick on my feet like that) :D

Does jury duty summons come certified mail???? Could have gotten lost in mail..............................

Ignore the jury summons. Result could be a bench warrant. Then if you are checked in some distant state you could be held in lock-up. i think that any state would grant a temporary waver if you respond "out of state". But you have to respond.

How do they know you got it in the first place? How can you be guilty if they do not have proof you got the duty summons?????
Prove that I recieved it????
Sorry, feeling a bit non conformist today .... :)

Hmmm...interesting. I read most of the Wikipedia article. Have you ever tried it yourself?

In my younger days, whenever I got a jury duty letter by mail (as it was so obvious), I would borrow from a local mailbox service the stamp "Return To Sender - Address Unknown" and stamp that message in red ink a couple times on the front of the envelope and throw it back in the mailbox. That actually worked for many years!

Just tell them you're an advocate of jury nullification. Most judges and prosecutors won't want you on the jury.

Be careful trying to use excuses like advocate of jury nullification and such. Most likely you'll be questioned, so you need to know and understand your "lie" inside out.
I don't think I'd wanna hear what the judge says when you've been discredited while trying to act your way out of it.

Tell them you are an NRA Life Member and a firearm collector...... got me 'excused' from a Fed trial (firearms crime) that I actually wanted to be on. But when I answered the questions truthfully, both legal beagles had sour expressions - NOBODY wants a guy who actually KNOWS the subject at hand on a jury. :dodgy:
Saying a friendly "hello" to the defending attorney in the hallway after lunch got me canned from the County court - I was foreman on that one. But the female legal beagle thought I had heard some exchange between her and her client - I told the judge maybe she should not be discussing the trial in the public hallway? Didn't matter - "You are excused!"
Got lucky on the latest one - called in the morning of the trial and my number range was excused. First 60 bodies were selected - I was number 103.

I have been on three juries and excused from another. Each was a good experience.
The judge does not know if you didn't receive the notice. If he does issue a bench warrant you have to come back to tell him you didn't get the notice. I don't have any experience on how they get you back from Distant State if you get picked up on a bench warrant. But I bet it is good for a few hours in lock up.

If it gets to the warrant stage, they will get you just about anywhere now days. Ship ya back, and then even if you get off, your stuff is in impounded. They aren't gonna pay the impound fees :(

I wonder tho i they even bother....there has to be 1000s of people who never get the summons, and 1000s of more candidates to pick from.

Ive been summoned twice, and excused both times. 1 for finals, and 1 for taking care of elderly with cancer.

(necro thread, meant to post in another similar thread...)
