Wondering if anyone has been OTR and got a summons. How did you handle it. Are there any states that won't call you up or at least excuse you if your full-timing?

hav'nt gotten a summons since I was young and Evil!!!

found that not registering to vote keeps me off the list or "is it because I was young and evil!!" :)

Yes. I wrote and explained that I was traveling and would not be available. It probably helped that the postmark on the envelope was, in fact, from halfway across the country.

It must be that you were "young and evil";) Neither Cindy nor I vote and we both have been. I think it has to do with DL's here in Tx. Cindy is from Iowa and never voted and never got called up there, It must be different state to state.

I cant swear to it Mockturtle but if my memory serves me, which is ALWAYS questionable, :) I seem to recall this county I live in now wouldn't excuse it for traveling. I will be checking on this Monday for sure.

Alright, here is what you do: It is much more effective in person.
1. If you have a very real and responsible job, like me, there is a major acting role you must take on.
2. Dress like you are 85-90 years old. Your hair should be up and off your collar. Wear polyester in a neutral color that is ultra conservative. No make up. No jewelry. Make sure your shoes are very toned down.
3. Don't make a sound in the court room.
4. When called upon, meekly stand up, look the judge square in the eye and state, "Sir, I don't think I am mature enough for jury duty".
5. Keep eye contact.
6. You will be excused.
7. Quietly walk out of the court room.
8. Chalk that up to time saved! H a Ha Ha Ha
P.S. Works every time!

Since most of us try to get out of jury duty, it occurs to me that just about the only people who end up on juries are those who want to be. Scary, isn't it? :(

Simply, all you have to do is tell them you're can't make it there in time. Either because you're not in the state or city, and then they will waive you. Happened to me twice, and I wasn't even in a van!

I'm not a South Dakota (SD) resident, but from my many friends who are i understand that the state wants RVers so much they make a special provision for full-timers to be excused.

In 6 yeas I've never been called to Nevada.

I got called to serve on a NY jury while I was working in NH. I just called and told them I had moved out of state and that was that. I think if you have a voters ID, you can be summoned for jury duty, my friend who never registered to vote hasn't been called in 25 years.

67, and never called...that I know of. Have had licenses in 3 states, Tx, Az, Fl.

My story would be...*standing at attention* "Sir, I am here to do my duty and put the unjust behind bars where they belong, Sir."

Who says being a convicted Felon doesnt have advantages!!!.....No jury duty!!! :)

of course I do get called in for line-ups alot :)

And...have the privilege of being in the biggest photo album on the nation too.

I've been summoned several times and always do the same thing. I tick the box marked 'financial hardship'. As none of my employers have offered regular (or any) pay to employees serving jury duty, I've always been excused. I would actually be happy to serve on a jury, but not at the expense of being able to pay my rent or make my food budget, and the local courts seem to agree.

If traveling, I would simply return the form with a statement saying that I am currently out of state and unavailable to serve. I they ask for a date of return, make it about a year.

You need to find out the acceptable reasons for getting out of jury duty in your state.

Since I am self-employed (a one person business), I got out on grounds I was critical to my business as no one else was available to do the work. I think this excuse would work for a lot of people here.

Texas has started using the driver's license database as well as voter registration.

Ignore it and say you never received it if asked. Until they start using registered mail to prove receipt, there's no proof it ever came.

I've been on twice, actually enjoyed the experience. But that was before I went Deaf--last time to be interviewed I let the hearing aid squeal---that was as far as I got--I've been removed from their list of potential Juriors. I was told & I always vote..

I asked the judge if I could be excused on the grounds of my self-employment. "Would your self-employment prevent you from finding the defendants guilty or not-guilty," he asked me??
"Well.....I guess not" I answered.

"Well...then SIT DOWN!!" he barked at me!! (he was definately the 'hanging judge' and not a very nice man...at all!)

another time, I was in a very crowded courtroom, when the DA was explaining to the audience what the case involved was going to be about.
I raised my hand and said "I'm sorry, but I won't believe a word a police officer ever sais in a court of law. They're human just like the rest of us, and will lie to win their case just like anyone else would do."

I was promptly dismissed. :D

I probably would have said something like, 'Could be, your Honor; starvation will likely affect my ability to make decisions.'

At which point the judge would probably have chucked my butt in jail on contemptuous smartassery charges. :p
