Last night I camped at the Grinnell, Iowa rest area just off Interstate 80. A friendly attendant and I talked for about a half hour. As the subject of camping came up, I told him I was extremely tired after biking most of the day. He said it was fine to sleep overnight in my vehicle. The law is a 24 hour limit.

I asked about the "No camping" signs and he said that means tent camping or sleeping on the grass. Sadly, these rest areas were once a place full of vagabonds and exiled sex offenders and the state had to clamp down. He said the van will never be a problem as long as I limit it to one day or at least go to the other side of the highway. It was a great night's sleep and much quieter than the state campgrounds... The price was right, too.

V.T.

I'm glad Iowa has restful, safe rests stops. I would not stay overnight in one anywhere on the West coast.

If you get out this way, let me know if you want to meet up. I am usually a half hour away from Interstate 80.

Many of the old rest area buildings have been upgraded to more modern facilities with wifi. The one I stayed at in Grinnell even had a place to empty the sewage tanks, too!

VT

Sounds good. I'll be around this way for some time to come and usually don't wander too far away.

I can give you some info on excellent rest areas, campgrounds, and other boondocking places from the Mississippi to Des Moines. Let me know if you get out this way.

Take care!

V.T.
