We're on our first trip in our 1991 Vandura 2500 conversion. Twice now the van has refused to start. It will crank over fine, just no fire. After sitting for 45 mins or so it started up on Friday evening. It was a hot day so I am suspecting vapor lock. However, I drove around on Saturday in Redding, CA and it was almsot 100F degrees. We started and stopped the van most of the afternoon and it started everytime. Last night we drove about 5 miles and it refused to start so I had to get a tow to my inlaws house. This morning I went outside and the van started up like normal. So I am not thinking the fuel pump is the issue but maybe the relay. Anyone experience this kind of headache?

I went to Napa Auto Parts and got a new relay for $14. I figure that's a whole lot easier than the fuel pump at this point. The location of the 1991 GMC Vandura fuel pump relay is under the hood about in the center of the engine area just above the air intake. Easy swap. Crossing my fingers this is it.

yes,in my case there was a nice hunk out of the coil dust cover and it arced off a spark plug wire until the coil wires melted into the cap

no codes?

a 91 is fuel injected = no vapor lock. sounds like either your fuel pump is going out or ignition control module is going south. could be other things but that's the two most common. next time it does it check for spark and/or shoot some quick start in the intake if no spark it's probably the ICM if it fires briefly with the quick start it's probably the fuel pump. note you must spray the quick start on the engine side of the air cleaner. highdesertranger
