Interesting encounter this evening.  Met a guy my first night in Corpus Christi, in a van pulling 30' trailer.  I've camped in several different places over the last 10 days, he's been in the same spot.  Anyhow, when I drove by this evening he flagged me down, said he needed a jump.  Told him I don't give jumps do to the electronics in today's vehicles but that I had a generator and a charger we could charge his battery with.  He seemed irritated by this and mentioned he couldn't make any calls either as his cell phone was dead.  I offered the use of my phone and to charge his.  He again declined.  Then he asked if I had any money as he hadn't eaten in 3 days.  Told him I'd be more than glad to give him a little food but no money.  He turned that offer down as well.  As a parting comment he stated I'll just flag someone else down that's willing to help me out.  LOL, i offered him assistance on everything he stated he needed.  Oh well, I wished him the best and went on to my fishing spot.  ?????

There is just no helping some people. You are a good person to offer him all of that. If I hadn't eaten in 3 days...man!?

It sounds like he was looking for something in particular. Maybe a loaded wallet?

That encounter was just as fishy as anything you may have pulled out of the water. I'd say don't let yourself be flagged down by him again. Great you were willing to help on all his needs.

Sounds like he was fishing before you got a chance. But he was fishing for your money.

When dealing with people like this, you need a big shovel for the amount of shit they throw your way....

Sorry to say it but a lot of people want a handout. What amuses me I guess is here I am in a 92 Ford van. It's not a Mercedes-Benz. I look like I have a lot of extra cash laying around? And you know how many of those people are out there every night. Some of them work in teams. Beware of the scammers. There's a whole lot of them. If they want gas money I can't help them. If approached in McDOnalds I will buy them a meal. Then there was the time someone asked me for money so they could get a motel room in the middle of the Summer. Jeez......HoboJoe

Good on you for offering help, Bob. You're a big hearted guy.

Anyone encountering this situation in Texas there is a phone number on the back of Texas DL for roadside assistance.  I'm sure it's for anyone in the state wherever you call home.  This way you wouldn't be leaving someone in harms way and they will be helped.  I haven't used it but friends of mine have.  The number is: 1-800-525-5555.

Some of these people are really good at finding a good hearted soul who wishes to be helpful, then take them for everything they can get. This guy would have been triggering my alarm right off the bat.

I will also decling jumptarting another vehicle unless I am in complete control of the process.

I once tried to help out a guy when My cables were just 14 awg clamps from my aircompressor and a 10 awg extension cord. I explained it would take 10 minutes or more before enough current passed, and that trying it before then would smoke my undersized cablng never designed intended for jumpstarting. Soon as i hooked it up he jumped in his car and went to turn the key. I saw the intent and removed a clamp, then after a few choice words were thrown around, I coiled up my undersized wiring, and drove away to a chorus of curses and one fingered salutes.

Same parking lot years later I saw a good citizen try and jumpstart someone else. not sure what went wrong but the helpful person's car was soon on a flatbed.

Be very weary of Jumpstartng From or to Modern vehicles. When i had a Jumper pack it was great for avoiding that situation. Right now i do not even have a battery under hood. I could unwrap some connectors and turn a switch, but it is a good excuse to not HAVE to jump someone. it would be different if it was not urbania central, but too often trying to be helpful is not only not appreciated, it is damaging.

Yeah. Whenever someone tells me they are hungry and I offer them food and they refuse it, it makes me wonder.

I too will decline jumping strangers. They will inevitably do something to fry the diodes in your alternator, or burn something up, leaving you stranded as well.
There are just too many scammers out there, and this person sounds like one of them. He may have been trying to see how far you would expose yourself, then try and rob you. I have heard of cases were this happened. One guy that this happened to turned the tables on those two with a base ball bat. They acted like they were broken down, just like your guy, then tried to rob the guy that stopped to help.

@nature lover...you just bit on a 2 year old thread that was not longer active, it died a natural death. You just joined up a couple of days ago so now you are browsing through ancient history in terms of topics. If you are going to go  browsing through the forum that is fine. But please pay attention to the dates people were posting on the topics your are reading. A topic that has not been active for several years is a dead one, and many times that member who posted a thread is no longer an active member. This is true for all forums on the internet, not just this one.
