Something I've thought about, but haven't looked too hard into it, is
that you can find very inexpensive travel trailers or cab over campers on CL, that may have some roof leakage or other damage, but the
appliances, stove, refer, sink, water pumps, and sometimes an inverter
that are in good shape and could be salvaged for another project, and
then what ever is left just haul it to the scrap yard and may be get a few bucks for it.

That's exactly my plan for my '82 TT. Got a steal deal on it. It isn't cool enough to redo it. Also it has issues with side wall rot and though the ceiling doesn't leak, the rafters are bad/broken. But, what made it a deal was that the previous owner had it forever, put in a brand new fridge, hwh, and furnace has never been used. I'm living in it now, but it'll be a donor once I make up my mind what I want to go with. Step van? Shuttle bus? MH? Cargo trailer? Ahhh, decisions decisions. The frame will go to my son to build his tiny home.
What ever I don't use in the new rig can be sold. I think this would be a good side job if you had a place to do it. I look at the prices at the rv salvage places.... yeah.

There are plenty of old RV's out there that are in great shape. You do have to watch out for stuff that isn't serviceable anymore. They just don't make parts forever. Otherwise I just get a warm fuzzy feeling for the 70's motorhomes. I see them for a few grand or less in pretty good shape. I'd love to rework one into a extreme boondocking rig. I've also seen ads on CL where people have stripped RV's and are selling the various components.

Unless I could pin point a leak I would stay far away from anything with water damage.

that's a great idea, but you have to be very careful that the parts you want actually work. if you get one with a fiberglass body, the scarp man isn't going to give you much for it because he just has to haul the body to the dump. however if you where to get one with an aluminum body cheap enough and had the parts you wanted in good working order, this is a great idea. I myself thought of this but, I don't want a rv refer, rv furnace, or a tank water heater. so there is nothing left except the water system and the ac(which I don't want). so I get the door, windows, and water system. not worth it to me. highdesertranger

Some town scrap yards will make you pay to junk it!!! Beware.

Or just toss it up on Craigslist under the "free" section if you can't sell off the hull. ;) People will take anything and everything on there (except pets usually.)
