RTR was quite enjoyable again this year. It's always fun meeting people that share much of the same lifestyle experiences as me. Not that we are all the same, by any means!
After RTR, I stayed in Quartzsite for several more days, just enjoying being alone. I did a lot of hiking up in the hills, looking at the gold mines and desert plants. After getting shot at, I learned to stay away from one particular mine.
Algodones was my next stop. I camped between the Q casino and the border for 4 nights. Each day I would walk across the border and explore the town for a few hours. I didn't need dental but I probably should've got new glasses. I'll get them on my return trip.
I found a great little taco place for my favorite tacos al pastor and horchata. $1 each. I walked many streets, watching the locals and the gringos. I did stop into a couple bars and had some great conversations with Mexicans, both male and female. It gave me a chance to practice my lousy Spanish. :)
I was surprised about not seeing any of the RTR crowd there. Likely, I just missed them. A couple days ago, I came down with a cold or flu bug. So I moved to Yuma and am waiting here until I feel better. 12 hours of sleep last night did help considerably! Along with medicine and lots of water. Then on to either Ajo or Phoenix area to visit family. The adventure continues.

Get well soon, Iggy! May I ask where you camped 'between the Q casino and the border'?

There are hills on either side of the road after the canal. I parked on the right side, heading toward Mexico. You can't miss it. There were a half dozen RVs that parked there also.

you got shot at? which mine? there are 2 active mines, both are private property, but that doesn't give them the right to shoot at you. highdesertranger

It's the one on the left, after you get into the hills. I went beyond the no trespassing sign and heard shots from the other side of the pit with bullets flying over my head. Not cool! It is possible they were warning shots. Or just a lousy aim. I didn't stick around to find out.

Is it within walking distance to the border?
About a 3/4 mile walk. Or you can pay $6 to park at the border. But the border closes at 10 pm and your vehicle will get towed from the lot soon after. So, no getting drunk and passing out in Algodones, or it might cost you! :)

Looking forward to my next adventure, Alaska! I'm leaving Washington tomorrow, driving on up to the town of North Pole. Despite popular belief, Alaska is NOT an island. It is accessible by land, by driving thru Canada. I actually had two people (women :) ) tell me last week that they thought Alaska was an island!
My construction job starts the first of next week. So I don't plan to do much sightseeing, going up. But I should have ample time to explore and lollygag coming back at the end of summer. Work hard, play... easy. Lol Can't wait!

Congrats on the job, Iggy! Sorry I missed you at RTR, I was head down into my little solar project and didn't get around much. Have a blast on your travels! Sassy

Hey, so glad we could spend some time together! We will do it again when you're done in Alaska. Looking forward to it!

I've been in Alaska for almost 3 months now and it's been a very fun summer. Built a big, fancy house with my brother. The outside is all done and we just finished the electric and plumbing. Jerry hasn't wanted to push too hard, since he's in his sixties and has had numerous back surgeries. So I've only averaged about 32-35 hours per week.
That's given me plenty of time to hang out with nephews and nieces, explore Alaska a little, and recover from the physically demanding days (like roofing!). It's rained a fair amount too, so it's nice to take a day off if it's nasty outside. My van needed some work; a bit of engine work, side door painted, and a remodel inside. I gutted it, painted the inside two tone (red and black), put down Pergo flooring with a plush carpet runner, and did some silhouette paintings on the walls. I'm a lousy artist but enjoyed doing them.
We are waiting on several inspections and sheetrock bids, so I'm leaving North Pole for 10 days to explore more. Denali, Homer, Seward, Whittier, Circle, and more. I have family in Anchorage, so I'll spend a couple days with them, too. Don't know when I'll pass this way again, so trying to see it all! I'll be at the RTR again in January. So if anyone is curious about Alaska, feel free to bend my ear.

sounds like a great summer...pictures would be nice too :)

Don't miss stopping in at Hope on the way down to Seward etc. Just a cool funky little village that's fun to visit.

Enjoy Iggy, I'll be up in Alaska next spring and stay til September.

Okay, I have some pictures to share. I have a $20 camera-phone so I apologize in advance for the quality.
