Thanks John. I've been there, about 20+ years ago. Fascinating place, especially Scotty's Castle. I might go there when I go to the Slabs. I have too many friends to visit on my way down the coast, to change my plans now.
It's funny you mentioned Barnes and Noble. I just found a $35 gift card to there in my van. I'd forgotten all about it! Lol

Well, I did something stupid! It was pouring rain and I felt sorry for a wet young gal with two small backpacks. So I gave her a ride. She just wanted to go a little ways, to a big apartment building in Coos Bay, where she had a friend she could spend the night with. I let her change out of her wet clothes in the back of my van. Then she said she would check if her friend was there and would be back within 10 minutes. She left both backpacks in my van. I waited over two hours for her to come back. I didn't know which apartment she went into. Finally I left to sleep at Walmart. I looked around the area for her the next day but no luck. I checked all my possessions and discovered she had stolen my old cellphone, my flashlight, some clothes, and my good sunglasses. I think that was all. I went to the police station and told them the story. She has a very distinctive look so they were hopeful of finding her. I gave them her backpacks too. Nothing of value in them except for her cellphone, which was locked.
I guess no good deed goes unpunished! I should have watched her every second, even while she was changing clothes! She actually stole a pair of my underwear, too. Lol

True. I've helped out a lot of people, even when I couldn't really afford to. And she looked pretty down and out. I really wish she wouldn't have taken that phone though. It was like a diary of my life 5 or 6 years ago. Hundreds of text messages, photos, notes, phone numbers of people I don't talk to anymore, etc. Little value to anyone else. The one she left was a better phone. I suspect she is a druggie by how twitchy she was. I thought she was shivering but now I have my doubts.

Was the phone locked?  How much personal info was on it?  Did you use it for doing any online banking or such?  It may be time to change a bunch of important passwords.  Might also want to put a fraud alert with the three credit bureaus to help deter identity theft and people opening new accounts in your name.

Fortunately, I didn't do any online banking or using a credit card on that phone. No password. At the time, I didn't have a data plan and only used it as a phone and camera. I got a better phone and plan, when I wanted to start doing internet stuff besides on my computer. Thanks for your concern and advice.

My tentative plan is to go down 101 all the way, making many stops at beaches and redwoods along the way. It'll probably be almost Christmas by the time I reach San Diego.
Then in January I'll attend RTR and probably go to Vegas afterwards, to meet up with some friends. Phoenix and Yuma, to visit friends and family. Then, hopefully, the Slabs for a bit and back to San Diego for a couple months.
But plans are made to be changed and if something interesting comes up, I'm easily convinced to go somewhere else, as long as I can afford it.
I'm just happy to be back on the road and to meet up with many of you at RTR. See you soon!

101 hugs the coast in Oregon and parts of California. I usually do 1 on part of the trip but think I'll hurry more than usual to get to warmer weather. My arthritis is worse right now due to cold and wet weather. It's pouring rain and windy in Crescent City right now!

The 1  switches between being "the one or "1" and the 101 ONLY thru thru the Central Coast of  CA.
Think of the "1" from San Simeon and North, up, and the 101 from San Luis Obispo to Vandenberg only and then we call it the "1" again.
Think of the road that hugs the Pacific coast.
We coastal CA'ians can be a pain in the rear about what you call areas of our state, just one of those annoying things we are born with?

I have always thought of the Coast Highway as 1, and everything else did not matter.      101 parallel it inland a range or two.  Up through the Sonoma Valley to above Ukiah.  I 5 is through the Central Valley.  

I followed 1 up to SF, then had to head inland on my last trip.  When I was a teen, I had a lot of road trips on 1 N of SF.  This spring I will take my time~~~

That's an awful feeling to have someone steal from you. Leaves a knot in your stomach and takes away your peace of mind for some time. I just hate to hear that. I'm so sorry.

When my husband died a couple of years ago I had several things stolen out of my barn and even off my porch. What was especially difficult is that it had to be by someone who knew us. I looked at every friend differently for a long time trying to trust again. It was really a low blow. I'm in the country and had never had any problems with thieves.

Since I'm in the Bible Belt someone said to me something they had read in the bible about a special place in hell for those that will take advantage like that of a recent widow. I can't remember the exact quote and I'm not a Christian but it did give me a bit of relief to imagine them dancing in hot flames [emoji15]

Lots of meth heads in the bible belt.  They read the paper to see who died, and target the home.   :dodgy:

After losing thousands worth of tools to someone I trusted, I have the attitude that it is all just things, and not worth destroying myself over.

Everything is confusing there.  Most cities are built on a rectangular system.  In SF they put in Market Street to shake things up.  

It is crazy how it goes from 7 lanes on down.  I saw a lot of people touring it on bicycles!
