After too long talking about it, today I bought a 94 Blue Bird school bus!  It needs some TLC but the body is in great shape.  It has a chevy 350 small block that likely needs a new cam and a valve job.  It also needs a muffler and some other odds and ends.  But I got it for what I think is a very reasonable $2500.

Congratulations!!

It will be very interesting to see what you turn it in to, will be watching for the build pics and stories.

looks good scoundrel, good for you. just a quick for your information. if it does need a cam and valve job, last year I did a engine job on a 350. the engine brand new from GM was $1775.00 before taxes. that's a brand new engine with a 3 year 30,000 mile warranty from GM. so if you are getting quotes around that number just wanted you to know. keep us updated on your conversion. highdesertranger

... and with a face only a mother could love, much like my step van, ha,ha. Congratulations.

BTW my wife and I are crowd sourcing a name for the bus. So if anyone has any suggestions let me know.

First...I LOVE the bus!

Not quite a stepvan, but that's a great alternative!

now....as for that name thing...

Don't pre-Name your rig. If you do, you can set an unwanted personality trait into it that you may not desire.

I'd suggest, to simply wait, and it'll let you know it's name when the time is right (and it's ready to share it with you.)

What color were you planning on repainting it?  I believe it is illegal - in most states - to have a bus painted school bus yellow if it is no longer in use as a school bus.  Anyway, the new color might affect your choice of name.  If you did the bus over in white, it might become "Moby Dick".

Regards
John

My wife wants to paint it blue, like the Tardis, from Dr. Who. I love sci-fi, but that may be going a little too far.

Congratulations you two, as the others will be interested to watch your build.
In some ways I wish I had a small bus like that.

Good luck Mike R

That is so COOL! How long is it? I just missed out on a 19 footer.

The bus is about 23 and a half feet bumper to bumper.  There are 4 of us in my family, so this just isn't enough space for us all long term.  But, it's a good start I think.

Yeah, I was talking 19 ft bumper to bumper as well, but I think it would work fine for just me, although 24 ft would work well too.
The good thing about yours is you should be able to get your money back when you get ready to sell it once you've taken care of the engine issues.
I wonder how much a Chevy crate engine will set you back now days?

I did a chevy crate motor last year. 350 motor was 1775.00 without tax. highdesertranger

The other day we discovered that the handicap lift still works. You just had to have the motor running to use it. Now I'm having to re-think what I'll do inside because Mrs. Scoundrel wants to keep it to use as an outdoor cooking area.

About the engine, I can get a freshly rebuilt (every bit as good as new) installed for about $600.

As good as new? That would be a GREAT deal! If you don't mind my asking, where do you find that?
PS. using the lift for outdoor cooking sounds good.

a fresh rebuilt engine INSTALLED for $600??????

either someone left out a 0 on that number, or they're selling you an empty engine case!

It would cost over $800 in PARTS ALONE to properly rebuild an engine, (without any machine work), and I wouldn't consider installing one for less than $1000! (and I'm cheap!!)
I know guys who have bought rebuilt engines for $1500.00, and they had to remove the old one and put the new one in themselves.

Sorry bro...but something doesn't add up here. (unless this offer is from your brother-in-law, and he has the engine left over from a different project.)

Just be careful with the lift that you learn all the ins and outs of how it works and the power it draws. My 19 foot extended van was a public transit bus with lift. The reason I got it so cheap before it was to be scrapped is that the daycare for adults with disabilities could not get it to work properly even with a professional electrician trying to help them. Mine ran off of a second battery in the undercarriage battery box.

In my rig, my family helpers removed the lift and disconnected all lines going to it. But on a run to the auto parts store for other parts, the van suddenly refused to move from the store parking lot. The motor would turn over, but as soon as we put it in gear, the engine would shut down.

We tried everything and could not figure out the problem. We still have no idea what "thing" we did that finally released it, but it had to do with the safety backups wired into the lift system. It had been set up to NOT go into drive if the panel got a signal the lift was not properly stowed. Something got bumped is our guess when entering the store lot that made the safety system think the lift was "out."

My solution was to take the van to a shop specializing in computer and electrical diagnosis. I simply had them disable the whole complicated electrical panel for anything not going to running the engine.

I have the second battery set up to still charge off the running engine (along with the starter batttery), but that battery's output now goes only to my inverter inside.

Sorry for the long story, but wanted to illustrate the unseen safety checks built into some systems -- if you are out somewhere and cannot get your bus in gear... check everything having to do with that lift.

Scoundrel I agree 600 bucks for a rebuilt engine installed is a fantasy. just look up how much a master rebuild kit is. the cheapest you will find is about 800 bucks and those use junk parts. then you have the machining and labor. if a deal sounds to good to be true then it's not true. highdesertranger
