Yes DC generators can be very powerful and cost-effective.

I've almost jumped on eBay bargain high-output alts a few times,

one very specialized unit sized 300+A max, designed to put out 230A at 1600rpm.

Also surplus Hummer alts rated for 500+A at 24V (6kW?) but that'll require higher rpm, not to mention maybe 30HP and lots or torque. Maybe off a decent truck PTO?

Coupled with LFP, one hour of runtime would cover many days' usage for most rigs.

But for running aircon, you'd need to burn the dino juice maybe 20% of the time.
 
With a smaller A/C a small inverter generator is less expensive, makes less noise, sips fuel and takes up less space. Were I to know I had to have A/C at night I would run the A/C off my $152 800w Sportsman during the day while the solar replenishes the batteries from running it over night.
