We purchased a 2005 Chevy conversion van this past summer with only one opening in the overhead compartment above the cab that housed the TV, so there was no other way to get into that area without first removing the TV. I was able to remove the TV easily by removing the wood trim on the paneling surrounding the console and exposing a face plate that attached the TV to the paneling that could then be unscrewed and detached.
Even if we would have had doors/openings on either side of the TV, we still wouldn't have been able to get to the area behind the TV because there were wooden vertical walled supports on either side of the TV that kept it firmly in place in the overhead compartment.
The TV that I removed from our 2005 ran off 110V and had a small 75W inverter hardwired into the car battery.
