Life is good when basic needs can be met. Unfortunately if you live long enough seems it becomes difficult to continue to meet them! Good physical and mental health are important elements. Living simply relieves a lot of worry and stress for sure as it makes basic needs easier to maintain but building an emergency fund at a young age and having it in later life does as well! Think about what will happen to the fisherman when he gets too old to fish! Lol!!! Ain’t nothing easy in this life! Big difference between having not enough and just enough. Not so much between having just enough and being able to save and that is the problem for a lot of people that end up with too little too late. Fortunately living simply makes it easier to have just enough and a little easy seasonal work makes it easy to save. Fisherman is probably going to end up shuttling people to the dock at 71 years old cause he can’t maintain the boat any longer like me! Lol!!!

The fisherman is helping himself just fine. The long fin Tuna the Banker admired are not an ever expansive, unlimited resource which most fishermen would understand. And a Banker probably wouldn't as he may be more focused on numbers more than nature. At the rate the fisherman is taking fish for his livelihood the resource he relies on is able to sustain itself. As the fisherman states, he spends time with his kids which is his investment for his advancing age. He spends some of his time fishing and with his wife and friends as well. He has this as his quality of life. (and mental health as Bullfrog states) In this HE may be the more wealthy.

In an Album by The Door's, ( "The Soft Parade" ) Jim Morrison sings...."All our lives we scrimp and save........building for a shallow grave". Again, how much is enough as the OP ask. What will the Banker's memories of life be beyond his childhood when in those years he likely had a simpler life like the fisherman ?

The question we would need to ask ourselves is: "How much will we actually need" ? And.....:..."Are we the needy or the greedy" ?

I heard that 8 is enough.

Joking aside, the fisherman would most likely have a family with his bride, and teach his kids how to do what he does, as his parents probably did with him.

When he got older, his kids and grandkids would probably do the fishing. With plenty of time to hang out with him, their families, and their amigos.

^^^Any more life is seldom that easy, one medical bill, equipment costs even fuel costs can cause a career change or bankruptcy! What happens if that kid wants to do another career or work remotely off grid, live in a van and travel! Lol!!!
