I've never used a hot water bottle, but it strikes me as something that might be useful for a little extra heat inside a sleeping bag or under blankets. Anyone here ever tried heating up some water in, say, a 12V teapot while driving just before bedtime and then pouring it into a hot water bottle for overnight use?

SOP at grandma's house when I was young.  Hot water bottle or hot iron (the kind that was heated up on the stove) wrapped in towel at foot of bed to keep us kiddies warm.  Used a Nalgene bottle filled with hot coffee while mountaineering; same principle.  Just needed a little heating up in the AM for hot coffee.  BP (before puppy) I would on very cold nights use 2: on at the foot, one to cuddle.  12V teapot would work if you drive a lot otherwise whatever stove you use for cooking.  The more volume the longer it stays warm.

Yeah, I guess any hot beverage would work just as well. If I'm staying at a truck stop, I can order buy a large coffee and pour it into a plastic bottle. And since I'm not picky about cold coffee, I'll have my wake-up brew waiting for me when I wake up.  :)

I have a real hot water bottle (from the elderly-care section of the drug store) and it works reasonably well, but boiling water will eventually cause it to leak (not good) so I'm always a little extra cautious about using it and take care to use it with water that isn't quite boiling.

Before I bought the hot water bottle, I used a wide-mouth 1 liter nalgene bottle. It worked really well, and I didn't worry at all about it leaking. If my "real" hot water bottle ever sprung a leak, I wouldn't bother replacing it, I'd just use a nalgene.

And there's the fact that the Nalgene bottle can be used for (ahem) other purposes as well....

Just don't forget you've got hot water in there lol, that would be unpleasant.
I'm not sure how I feel about a combination hot water bottle and pee bottle, but I suppose if you never ever drink out of it that it would be ok.

I think of it as multitasking.

(Note to self: Label all bottles carefully!)

Of course, a hot water bottle eventually loses it's heat until it reaches the ambient temperature under the bedding, which is maintained by your body heat. It's ironic that in the course of the night the situation shifts from the bottle keeping you warm to you keeping the bottle from getting cold.

Personally, having nice warm feet helps me get to sleep after that I usually can't feel a thing. If not, a cold bottle down there gets kicked out from under the covers by morning

For many years now, I have used a 1 liter sparkling water bottle, filled with just-under-boiling water, slid into a cotton athletic sock, terry cloth out. I have used the same bottle many, many times with no problem of leaks. If I rest the back of my neck across the hot bottle, it eases the pain "from 7 decades of bad posture". Then it goes to my toes and provides hours more of warmth.

I wonder if the bottle is a little more robust because it was holding carbonated water (under pressure) rather than still water.

Oh yes, they are definitely  more robust that the regular drinking water bottles. Those I wouldn't trust to even put moderately hot water in!

Check out the bottles in the water aisle. You can always start with one of those and graduate to a Nalgene when you can.

I'd agree with that, you can hold an empty coke bottle and a water bottle and feel the diference in the thickness
