I bought a Chevy Express with a hi-top, and it came with a Honda EV6010 liquid-cooled RV generator already in it.  This thing needs some servicing...it's got an oil leak apparently and needs a battery and other stuff.  I am going to install solar panels so it would be a backup power source.  I'm trying to decide whether to sell it or keep it.

PROS:
It's already there.  It's built into the van with an access hatch. Selling it might be a hassle.

CONS:
Apparently it's loud, and it's probably overkill for what I need it for.  It takes up a good deal of space too.

I'm thinking I could potentially sell it and if I got an OK price I could use that towards my build, or even a smaller, quieter generator.  Since it's already built into the van though I'm not certain if it's worthwhile.  And the extra electricity could be useful, say for powering an art installation at Burning Man or something.

What do you guys think?  I confess I know very little about generators so advice is appreciated.

the Honda water cooled genny's are top of the line. if you don't need it sell it you could get some bucks for it. they are not as loud as comparable genny's. why did they need a 6k genny in a van? AC. highdesertranger

The original owner of the van outfitted it for doing sewer maintenance work in Florida...they were running AC, some heavy machinery, lights and a bunch of computer stuff off it.  I have to get it serviced and then I might sell it.  There's a chunk cut out of the floor where it's installed with the access hatch though so I'm not sure...

I'd find out what it may cost for servicing before deciding anything. A tune up, even a new carb may not be bad but seals likely means a R&R on it. Compare it to what you may be able to get out of it or what a generator that you might use to run a art installation would cost. 6000 watts is a pretty pricy inverter generator. The least expensive way to do it that I could think of is a few grand to parallel a pair of Champion 3100i inverter generators. Then again if you don't need a lot of power my Sportsman 800w inverter generator was $157. It's no louder than a Honda 2000 when both are under load.

Jimindenver - thanks for the suggestions!  So the EV6010 is an inverter generator?  I just assumed it was a regular generator but that's a nice bit of news.

No I don't believe so. However inverter generators to replace it would be quieter and have cleaner output. They would be portables not built in. Other built in generators would include Onan and Generac, I don't believe currently that there is a built in inverter generator.

I did find a working unit sold at a auction for $777.

No it's not a inverter. I just look at the current portable inverter generators to compare what it would take to replace the power. You could get a equivalent power open frame for considerably less but it is portable and had a DB rating of at least 74 db.
