We have been using VCR's to do our recording every since they came out. Unfortunately they record in terrible quality compared to todays standards, not to mention our tapes are getting unusable.

The Homeworx HW-15-PVR is a digital converter box that will record in HDMI if you hook a hard drive to it. That means it will work with older HD TV's that don't have a digital tuner. It delivers the signal via HDMI, component or normal antenna port. I have only tried the HDMI and the picture is great.
Once hooked up and the channels are scanned, you can get a on going program guide for each channel. You can record by pushing the record button or by looking ino the guide and choosing a program to record. it will do it once, daily or weekly.
We have two and once a show is recorded on one the hard drive can be moved to the other for viewing. It will also play movies, music and display pictures stored on the hard drive. You can also push pause while watching a show and restart it when you return.
As a converter box it picked up 64 channels off of my little DVD case antenna.
Aside from the high quality recording, it is much smaller than a VCR and you don't have to rewind the tape.
