I have always had an interest in alternative living and homes. While doing some research on cob houses I came across this  https://mudandpearls.wordpress.com/cob-workshop/  There have been threads in the past on cheaprvliving about a homebase etc. What these folks have done could easily be done by a bunch of us on this site helping each other. I think building one of these would be a gas.

Personally, I think it's a great idea, pooling resources, skills, tools and talent. Cob, straw bale, log, underground, whatever best suits the location and what materials are at hand. There will be naysayers, always are, the sense of urgency not making itself apparent yet.

How far out of Dodge does Holeinthewall need to be to be beyond the purview of municipal p&z boards? Unincorporated townships, perhaps?

All kidding aside ... I too have always been fascinated by alternate living and building. I love the ideal of the underground house, but they would not work where I live, because of the water tables. Lots of people here have water wells at 50 feet. I have/had two front end alignment men in my family. Both with their own shops....they have always had to pump the water out of the pits during wet weather.

For where I live, I tend to like the ideal of the Bottle house or the beer can house or any of the ideals where the house is constructed from recycled material....recycling at it's finest :p

Well I guess it's us three, ice has the ground and lots of beer bottles. ATB, as usual, has good ideas. So lets get busy, I'll supervise :D Anyone else want to join in?

great term, can't do one now-eye in the sky.I took the camper shell off my truck---accessor came out to see what "new" building I had---showed him it was a camper shell---he took pictures of it on the ground, so funny I thought.
I have 2 tractors with front end loaders & a ditch witch---might just drive them crazy(fun & games).go in the woods---dig what looks like graves or something..I would love to dig a small pond.

I love alternative homes.....why else would I be on here???? :D

why...we have onna the best cob building schools in the nation, only 15 miles from me...

I'm already planning on attending one of their seminars this spring!

I have 2 1/2 acres in Ramah NM just waiting for a little adobe home. My neighbor has a small wood home/shed and they built a beautiful garden wall out of mortar or something and beautiful colored wine bottles, I guess its called a bottle wall. This summer guys?

Now I remember why I come here, like minded folks. Let's work on this, let your mind run free

I've been dreaming of a cob house since I first read about them, one is definitely in my future! I'm getting rid of most of my books, but my beloved copy of Hand Sculpted House is staying in my library.

The area of NM where we are is expecting overnight high teens - low 20's with the next cold front for about a week (or more). And then there is the dust and wind. Don't kid yourself. It does get cold in NM and you need to be prepared for freezing temps. It's just not snow/ice all winter. BTW, we live in a desert valley, not in the mountains where they do get snow/ice a LOT more than we do.

I got 10 acres that is mine...bought and paid for...five water wells crick runs along the west side, I grew up there. it is in a unincorporated town with maybe 10 people still living in the vicinity.
some day when the moon is right I keep telling myself I will get a dumping station put in and set up some garden area and see what comes of it.
make it a safe place or something like that for friends
Nebraska is hot in the summer and cold in the winter
I do not know

c, Which among us does know ? I think that's why we're wandering around out here, trying to figure it out. Keep trying

I should stop being an irresponsible louse and fix this up. let some one move in and stay out of the weather
birch wood beauty detroiter, I remember when we bought her and put her on those blocks. trees seem to have grown up around the old girl, kind of helping to keep her there.

Buckwilk - Have one of the "Cutting Edge" earthbag builders living in a trailer I built-out at the J-Tree compound. ;)
Faster and easier than cob. Will find a link.

I like the Geodesics put together out of cardboard at Burning Man.  I attended two of those back in the days cruising the lower 48.

A total bargain to put up and they'll last a couple of years sprayed with polyurethane.  You can scale up quite a bit if you glue the cardboard to 2" wall insulation panels and go 5-up with the geodesic.
