New to the forum, and aspiring to the lifestyle
I have one kid still at home who plans to leave the nest in the spring when school is completed. As soon as the door closes behind her the "For Sale" sign will go up on the house and I'll be shopping for my home on wheels. I still have a few years 'til retirement, so I'm thinking I'll buy a cheap older motorhome and live in it during the warmer months to see how it goes, traveling as much as I can on weekends and vacations.
If all goes well, I'll look for a camper van when I'm ready to hit the road. I'm wussy enough to want the basic amenities but I want to be able to go into cities as well as forests so a Class B ought to be just right.
Thank all of you for contributing a wealth of information! The web is full of sites dedicated to RVers and retirees, spending their pensions and their grandkids' inheritance in their shiny rigs in the nice RV resorts, so it's a breath of fresh air to see how the rest of us can have it too. It's tremendously encouraging for those of us whose retirement accounts took a hit a few years back (or who were too busy just getting by to save for our "golden years") to see that it's possible to travel and live on the road without a huge nest egg. It truly is like any other lifestyle - use the resources available and adapt accordingly. I'm confident now that I can get by on my piddly savings coupled with occasional volunteer and/or paid jobs on the road.
So a big thanks to Bob and to each of you for sharing! Hopefully I'll see you on the road before too long
