New to the forum, and aspiring to the lifestyle

I have one kid still at home who plans to leave the nest in the spring when school is completed.  As soon as the door closes behind her the "For Sale" sign will go up on the house and I'll be shopping for my home on wheels.  I still have a few years 'til retirement, so I'm thinking I'll buy a cheap older motorhome and live in it during the warmer months to see how it goes, traveling as much as I can on weekends and vacations.
If all goes well, I'll look for a camper van when I'm ready to hit the road.  I'm wussy enough to want the basic amenities but I want to be able to go into cities as well as forests so a Class B ought to be just right.

Thank all of you for contributing a wealth of information!  The web is full of sites dedicated to RVers and retirees, spending their pensions and their grandkids' inheritance in their shiny rigs in the nice RV resorts, so it's a breath of fresh air to see how the rest of us can have it too.  It's tremendously encouraging for those of us whose retirement accounts took a hit a few years back (or who were too busy just getting by to save for our "golden years") to see that it's possible to travel and live on the road without a huge nest egg.  It truly is like any other lifestyle - use the resources available and adapt accordingly.  I'm confident now that I can get by on my piddly savings coupled with occasional volunteer and/or paid jobs on the road.

So a big thanks to Bob and to each of you for sharing!  Hopefully I'll see you on the road before too long :)

Greetings!

What area of the county are you in?

I new here as well and learning a lot. I'm in Flprida Gator territory.

Thanks all.  I love the spirit of this forum.  Lots of help without the snark  ;)   Makes a newbie feel welcome!
I'm in Michigan.  I love the summers, but am soooo tired of the winters.  I'm looking forward to trading my snow shovel for a road map to 70° weather, tho that's a ways off yet.
And I'm really looking forward to being a non-homeowner.  It was a great place to raise my kids, but now it feels like a millstone around my neck.  Now that I see the light at the end of the tunnel, the endless repairs and maintenance, taxes, etc. just look like someone else's future problem.
I feel freer already.

Mayble, you and I are in almost the exact same situation. My younger daughter is in her last year of high school too.
Last year, she said she wanted to live with her dad, though, so I let her and chunked the house real quick. I moved in with my parents on the other side of the state line while I prepared. I knew exactly what I was going to do as soon as she graduated high school. Leave town!
HOWEVER, right before senior year started, Dad took a job overseas. Wasn't that nice of him? Guess who agrees to move into HIS house so that our daughter doesn't have to change schools. Yours truly. I'm riding the 3-way line of I-can't-believe-I'm-staying-in-my-exhusband's-house vs. I'm-spending-quality-time-with-my-daughter-before-she-enters-adulthood vs. I-want-to-be-on-the-road-now.
Good luck with everything! I know it's hard to wait but that's just extra time to prepare...that's what I keep telling myself anyway. :)
