I am thinking about getting an older, class A RV with low (50K to 100K) millage. I will have the power/tran system checked by a mechanic. I will also be checking closely for water leaks. I can do upgrades of the interior over time if necessary as I travel. I am looking in the $6,000-$10,000 range. This is a test run so I don't want to spend a lot of money until I decide if I want to stay with this life style. I will be touring the US and Canada changing locations every 3 to 7 days so I will be putting a lot of miles on it. What do you think of this strategy? Do older RVs with low millage tend to have engine problems? Obviously a diesel is preferable but there aren’t many of them in the 25 foot range like I am looking for.

with something like that it is usually not the drive train thats the issue but the rv and its systems,if you are not in a rush you should be able to find something pretty clean in that price range, look for fiberglass shell

Well, since you asked for it . . .

I think, given the kind of mileage these rigs get, that that is going to be a very expensive strategy.  You would be far better off setting up a base camp someplace for more than a week and using a towed car to thoroughly explore an area before moving on.

Such a slow tour strikes me as a much better strategy than trying to emulate those "7 European Countries In Only 10 Days!" tours.  Last thing you want is "If it's Tuesday, then this must be Utah."

As always, Free Advice is always worth every penny you paid for it . . .

Good luck whatever you do.

Actually, small Class As are hard to find. One of our members has a small Class A and it took him awhile to find it. I'm not even sure that a Class A exists in 25 foot.

On the other hand, finding a Class C in that size is a dime a dozen. If it were me I'd be looking for a Class C. I also find them much more normal to drive in town, it's just a van nose with a big box behind it.

I'd also be planning on a towed vehicle.

I seen quite a lot of 25' class A rigs but as was said , the mpg can be low !
And many class C rigs aren't a lot better , smaller engine but hauling a bigger load compared to engine horsepower.
(My 29' class A with a big 440 V8 got 9mpg while my 23' class C with a 350 gets 6 !)
Choosing a rig by mpg instead of size seems a better approach (to me) .
And , of course YMMV ,,,,,,,,,,,,(I couldn't resist that one !)

Well played rvpopeye, well played. Gotta love a chuckle first thing in the morning. Rob.
