My rig didn't originally have tilt out rear windows. But I found a wreck that had them and gave a guy $15 both of them with the understanding that I would take them out. No real feat to do that but I also had to take the gaskets out of the window frame to go into mine. In mine I had to take a box cutter to cut the gaskets so the window would come out. I only had to drill 3 or 4 holes for the screws at the top of each window to install them, install the gaskets, and then fasten the windows in.
Where I was using the A/C before, I found I could open the rear windows and open the front door windows to ventilate the Van so it was cool enough to be pleasant and save my gas. My Van is a high top (photo of it in the Van Conversion site below) I'm lucky to get 16 mpg in overdrive and 11 or 12 with the A/C going.
I've made mosquito net window covers for those windows which have magnetic strips in the edging so they are easy to install or fold up to stow away when not needed. Recently I purchased a couple pieces of that plastic rain gutter shield for a house at Lowe's and made front window screens with them so I have about 6 inches of ventilation with the windows partly rolled down. They come in brown and white and I find the brown color looks like the window after dark and are more stealthy. I got some thin card board and made a template that fit into the window channel and traced that over the gutter screen before cutting it. There were a couple of pockets at the lower corners that I cut scraps to fill and then glued those on so now it is a perfect fit. I may have a little over $4 bucks in that.
Questions: Where did you find those telescoping poles you are using on the outside corners of your awning ?
Do you find the awning to be one of the most important additions to your rig ?
