Hi, my name is Alex and I'm going to start a van conversion project in the next month or two.

I'm 26 and I decided on this lifestyle because I don't want to have to spend my life working just to be able to have my own place.  I also want to be able to relocate easily whenever and wherever I want.  Animals migrate, so why shouldn't we?

I'm currently trying to decide between a Ford Transit and a Dodge/MB Sprinter.  I have some logistical challenges to overcome, because I live in Brooklyn and don't have a garage - so as soon as I find my van I have to locate a place to work on it!

If anybody else has done or is planning to do a van conversion in NYC (or any other big city) I'd love to hear from you and find out how you made it work!  And if you're in NYC and you're planning to start working on a project say hi...maybe we can team up.

Welcome Alex to the CRVL forums! To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you. highdesertranger

Welcome to the CRVL :)

I think you are making a good move into a mobile domicile.  Fixing it up to get on the road can be simple enough from where you are to just get on the road.

You could get some ideas from my first website below.  Just a bed, carpeted floor, and kitchenette where you'll have cooler and a couple 5 gallon jugs for water.  You could use cardboard boxes to stow bath towels, bed linen, clothing, and miscellaneous items.   If you were wanting to get on the road immediately and say head south for the first winter,  you could find loads of places with barns or garages to rent short term for cheap.   That would get you in warmer weather and buy you time to fit out the Van to your actual needs.  (that is if you wanted to migrate to do it that way)

The lower website contains information for while being on the road,  planning an itinerary to follow so you can see sites which may be of interest to you, find free or low cost places to camp or stay,  and facilities where you could  clean up,  exercise some, relax and change clothing.   You can find weather reports by zip code, and much more.

Good luck with which ever platform you choose to modify.

Some of us are still running older model Vans,  so we'll be watching to see what you come up with as we will
sooner or later have to move up to something newer.   So take photos of your build for the rest of us to learn from.
