Many of my tools are from Harbor Freight. Gave HFT the nickname "China Freight Tools" because most of everything in the store is from China, even the American flags. I searched the internet for a "HF Tools worth buying" type guide, and found a couple blogs that weren't updated in over a year. Also searched for a HFT savings guide and couldn't find one, so I decided to write up a savings guide here. Can somebody share this post where it will be viewed by a wider audience? I figured it out so you don't have to.
Harbor Freight Tools Savings Guide:
-Harbor Freight Tools sends out paper coupons for "20% off Any Single Item", "FREE item with ANY Purchase", and even "FREE Item with No Purchase Required". They also regularly send out coupons for their most popular items like the power generators and automotive jacks.
-For many items the coupon price is the same or lower as the "Sale" price during one of HFT many store sales.
-Many of their "Sales" are not worth your time depending on how frugal you are. I found the "Parking Lot Sale" to have the most items lower than the Regular Retail Price, some items even marked below the coupon price.
-In HFT stores, they mix many deals (even at Regular Retail Price) with things you can find cheaper elsewhere.
-HF "versions" of some tools are 20-60% cheaper than a comparable tool elsewhere, keep that in mind when you considering a major HF purchase. On some of HFT's you can get a significantly better quality "version" paying a few dollars more elsewhere. Also, many of HF's power tools and equipment are clones of quality brand tools but made with lower-grade materials.
-Comsumables are where it's at inside HFT. If you're looking for parts and supplies for projects etc., HF has many power tool consumables, drill bits, electrical supplies any many more. For example HFT generic brand double sided foam adhesive tape is half the cost of a comparable roll found anywhere else($1.99 Regular Retail Price vs $3-5 for comparable tape in other San Jose, CA area stores)!
-Harbor Freight Tools without moving parts are good buys as well. Beware, many of the hand tools are made with low grades of metal.
-Always use a "20% Off Any Single Item" coupon on your most expensive Regular Retail Price item and make sure to get your Free Item! HFT coupons are valid in-store, over the phone, or online.
-I've noticed many HFT items having "creative cost shaving". They will go cheap on non-critical components, while keeping the functional part of a tool with acceptable-grade components.
-If you want to get the most out of a HF Inside Track Club membership, have a major purchase or a lot of little items on your shopping list so the savings is more than the cost of an Inside Track Club membership.
-The HFT Product Protection Plan is worth the cost if you can't afford to replace the item if/when it breaks or if you are unsure on how the item will work out for you (say you buy a Predator Generator and you don't like the noise).
This is Part 1, I can not think of any more tips and tricks right now. It's getting late and I need to get ready for bed.
