I was in at the supermarket this weekend thinking to myself about what to buy when it hit me. I've moved a couple of times and some of the stuff I'm used to buying I wasn't able to find in one place or the other. Then there's markets like Whole Foods that sell stuff you don't readily find at your local chains much the less the smaller mom and pop markets.

How do you guys deal with the harder to get stuff when you're all over the place?

Yes , sometimes getting the food that we like and want is a big problem. We prefer to buy organic as much as possible so when we are going into certain areas of the country we stock up ,especially with meat , because we know that we're not going to be able to find any organic food.

On the plus side we get to try local specialties, buy things in the supermarket that we've never seen and get really fresh local produce when it's in season.

Hmmm ... maybe we should have a sticky threads of local specialty foods by region. It would be nice to have a place to look up what's available where ever you happen to be going to.

If ever in So Cal, there is a yummy fruit from Mexico called Jicama (pronounced Hick-ih-muh).
Once I start out fulltime, I am planning on stocking up with things that I know I won't be able to find in the rest of the country and once I run out, I will be getting on Amazon to purchase what I need and have it shipped to my location.

I figure wherever I am I can find the makin's for a stew.

I like the idea of a sticky thread on specialty food stores, but as a practical matter I resonate pretty much with dfunct.

I do carry some specialty spices, but if there were a list of Oriental food stores in various places I think I'd probably refer to it sometimes.

I'm also in the eat what's there school....I do carry some fresh ground peanut butter (hard to find a place with a grinder), decent coffee and good chocolate esp. when I am headed to Mexico....I can find fresh fruit and veggies wherever I go....(and no I am not going to share my good chocolate....)

I trick I learned from a fellow traveler in Africa was to always carry some Starbucks Via coffee tubes to ensure good flavored coffee....I like to carry some good Irish black tea too.

That's just me of course and a smart man would become coffee-free to tame one monkey....
Bri

really not a big fan of whole foods. having farmed for some years and seen the grocery business i am not impressed with them, like every other major chain the produce and meat are anything but fresh. i prefer to get produce from roadside stands and meat from local types. however this is not always possible i try to make the effort. one thing that's pretty easy to find in rural communities no matter where, are eggs. why am i getting hungry. highdesertranger

Fresh eggs are great! We do buy them at the store when we have to and we eat a lot of eggs. An egg is a complete meal and a cheap source of natural protein.

Steve, don't know why you're worrying. They sell bacon everywhere!

Rae

True, but is it grass fed bacon?!? Ah hah!

I buy in bulk when I see a sale. I also use my fridge as a freezer and have it stocked with frozen meat & whatnot that I bought cheap. When I travel, I always have at least a month's worth of grub with me, often more. One thing I'll mention is that a good source of decent veggies, when camped out for a while, is salsa. I buy the 2 L containers and, once opened, keep it in the fridge. Can cook with it, but often just shovel it straight down the gullet. ..Willy.
