This is something that I just learned about a few weeks ago.....

Governments spend a lot of our money.  They buy a lot of expensive stuff and then sell it back to us, used, so they can justify buying new stuff.  The prices often aren't bad at all.  Also, they confiscate tons of stuff, then sell that, too.  And recovered items with unknown owners.

Do a search for (Your State) Public Surplus and see what shows up.  My neighbor says the good stuff comes and goes.

Then go to Government Deals at https://www.govdeals.com/    and check that list on the left for what they sell.  Put your state in the appropriate box and see what they've got locally.  It looks like most/much of it is sold by auction.

This one sells cars, vans, buses, trucks (pickups, box delivery trucks, semis, etc)
Also batteries, marine equipment, building supplies, kitchen equipment, electronics, storage containers, electrical supplies, furniture, industrial equipment, lighting fixtures, lumber, scrap metal, motorhomes/travel trailers/SUVs, outdoor living stuff, pipes, valves & fittings, plumbing stuff, pumps (fuel, water), sporting equipment, tanks, tools, trailers, vans, vehicle equipment  & parts, welding and woodworking equipment.  (I've only list the things that people here might be interested in.) :D

I was looking into this a few year back. I figured that if what I bought if it was junk I would disassemble separate the metals and scrap, but then the bottom fell out of the scrap market. so I gave up on the idea. I think there are deals but wiht no way to cover your ass it's risky. highdesertranger

Just be sure to click on the vehicle year/name to see what condition it's in.  Maybe just good for parts.

there might be a reserve. if the reserve is not met the auction will lapse and it will start all over again. I am not saying you can't get good deals what I am saying is be careful. highdesertranger

I buy on govdeals regularly, mostly tools and equipment. Generally the older and heavier something is the cheaper it is. I usually buy local stuff within 100 miles. Have a buddy who buys a lot of vehicles on there. IronPlanet is also another good online auction, gov and private stuff on there.

When I got out of the army in 1984, I would go the the auctions at Property Disposal on Ft. Campbell.  At that time they would have an auction every month or two.  You could go into the yard and building before bidding and look at the lots up for sale.  You would register to bid and get a bidders number.  I do not know if they still do the local auctions.

I spent a few years dabbling in auctions with the intent of making a few bucks on the stuff. Never did a gov't auction though. To be honest, I made a lot more money finding good deals on craigslist, putting a few bucks into the item and then reselling it. One year doing it part time I made just shy of 12k. I have no doubt you could make a living off craigslist in a good urban area (decent population to buy and sell to) if you wanted too. Won't make you rich, but you wont be punching a time clock either. Helps having a place to keep stuff. Yard, driveway and garage is ideal

I purchased several stuff from them.   As a matter of fact my van I got at a Govt Auction. Some work and a little bit of money and this 1986 G30 6.2 Diesel is running like a champ

My good friend just purchased a Stewart & Stevenson M-1083 6x6 10 ton truck from Iron Planet to convert to an all terrain "Expedition" type vehicle. This vehicle, a 1996 with 7000 miles on it, cost "you and me" $128,000. My friend got it for $12,000!

Low Tech needs to chime in about the 6x6. I haven't seen him on here lately. hope all is good. highdesertranger
